India to quit Champions Trophy

Well I dont really care about the Champions Trophy anyways as it proves nothing. But the BCCI might misuse its power and ruin the game I feel. Next you could have India opt out of tours they dont feel like.

what if they are the best Team in 2008-09 and they still wont play ??

They are not backing out because they are not the best team right now! They are backing out of it due to revenue problems. They lose out on a lot of revenue during the festival season of October-November! If they schedule matches in India in October-November, they gain a lot of money! So they do not want to lose out on money to the ICC who will gain lot of money from the Champions Trophy!

If India dont play, I think the sponsorship for the event would suffer heavily and there would be no good public interest!

Thats what India is now doing! They are questioning the ICC's Future Tours programme and are almost trying to create their own schedule of games!

I dont know how good that would be but lets see! There will be a point when you cant extract anymore milk from the cow! I hope India dont reach that point!

The ongoing discussion over the future of the ICC Champions Trophy took another twist when the Indian board (BCCI) made it clear that it will not take part in the one scheduled for 2008.

Earlier in the month the BCCI made fairly clear signals that it did not support the ICC fund-raising concept which it believed reduced its own earning potential.

"We're not free in October in 2007, 2008 or 2009," BCCI vice-president Lalit Modi told reporters on Monday. "We have made our position clear to the ICC many times. If others want to play, they can, but why should we play in October?

"We've not signed any agreement to play in future editions and we've made our position very clear to the ICC many times."

The comments will be a major blow to the ICC as effectively without India, who are one of the major revenue drivers, the tournament is unlikely to go ahead.

This is the latest development in a clear strategy change by the Indian board seemingly putting it in direct conflict with the ICC. The BCCI has also questioned the ICC's Future Tours Programme and suggested that countries be allowed to arrange their own schedules.

What in a hell India is thinking about. What is the BCCI is up too.
What are you talking about? BCCI is making the correct move. It's got too many series planned in that time period...they wont risk injuring their players without any rest.

I agree...........in that time Indias really busy.

i agree with india pulling out, what i don't agree with is australia touring india for 3 consecutive years, firstly i don't think the australian board will allow that to happen and secondly that will just make an over kill of india v australia

If BCCI cannot get support from other cricket boards then ICC can impose its will on BCCI and compel BCCI to do what ICC wants to do... If BCCI does not follw the ICC guidelines then BCCI may be debarred as a member of ICC and may be all the matches that BCCI arrange will be deemed unofficial...

This thing is surely going to the court. Laws will be bent and mended.... Money will prevail though

That won't happen. Everything will be sorted out at next ICC meeting in February. Problem is that the whole BCCI office has changed and the new staff has got no idea about past commitments and the way of administration. Sometime Cricket should prevail over money although ICC Chamions Trophy is rubbish with its timings and format etc.

As sad as I am to say it, I feel this is only the first part of something that is going to get very very big. I can see it heading the way of Formula 1, threats of a split.

I can't understand what India are doing. And then, after announcing this, they want to co-host the World Cup

What the BCCI is trying to do is two simple things:

1. Make money
2. Organize quality cricket

I'm not sure if I support this move, yet, but it seems like they only want to play high-quality opposition and maximize revenue. It seems like the BCCI's new administration is trying to make it like a private profit-maximizing company. Organizing frequent tours against Australia, England and Pakistan are overkill, but at least you know the quality of cricket would be better than against Zimbabwe or Bangladesh. But, BCCI may be abusing its powers and actually impeding the devleopment of cricket around the world.

I saw one report on tv today which said that Ehsan Mani has suggested that if the BCCI fails to honour past contracts (I guess by this he means the Future Tours Programme which was agreed in 2001), then they have every right to cancel their membership to the ICC.

That's a pretty big statement to make. Didn't happen that a while ago during the '80's? I remember some players of Australia and West Indies held a World Series back then. Don't know if they were kicked out of the ICC back then.

I guess what he actually said was that the cancelation of membership was also an option. But you think they can afford to do that?

I'd like to see them even try it. Just like that, about 70% of the money from cricket would disappear. Of the ICC's main sponsors, Hero Honda and Pepsi would instantly cancel. There's too much money involved with India, and by making statements like this, Mani is just inciting the BCCI.
