Feel kinda bad for Ash. I really think he would have had a serious impact with the ball in this series. Jadeja keeps trumping him with his better batting and fielding skills, even though his bowling has regressed dramatically in the last couple of years

First I hear of Jadeja's bowling regressing. Although Ashwin should 100% be playing instead of one of the seamers. 100%

Just a random stat

Pacers at Headingley(since 2011)= 217 wickets @29.84
Spinners at Headingley(since 2011)= 53 wickets @30.13

So spinners at Headingley aren't utilized in a proper way by the teams and along with it these are flat dry batting pitches so spinners must come into play by Day 4. It comes down to the weather now. So I don't think it would be a bad option for England to bring in Jack Leach who is averaging just under 30 in Tests for injured Mark Wood. Also, India would fancy playing both their spinners over here if it stays clear till the match day and there is not much of rainfall over the course of match. More so I am very sure both Ashwin and Jadeja will play at The Oval.

bad news. so we've actually no fit "fast" bowler now.
Saqib Mahmood is probably the quickest of those still standing. But his top speed is probably around Wood's average. He's perhaps closer to Broad in terms of pace, which is not a bad thing. I'd like to see Mahmood and Overton in for Wood and Curran. Four right arm fast medium might be considered boring/samey but it's been successful for India. Sam Curran's dibbly-dobblers have yielded one wicket so far.

Leach is no longer in the squad. So England it'll be Moeen and some Root.

Brilliant!!!!!! India have better chances of winning this one now unless Moeen springs a surprise.
Spinners have taken 14 wickets at 48 in the last three tests. Of those matches we've had West Indies and England chased 300+ in the fourth innings to win. 3rd and 4th innings are like the 3rd innings we've seen in the first two tests.

Sine 2011, Kane Williamson is second, behind Graeme Swann, with the most wickets for a spinner. Moeen has six wickets in 4 matches.

Speaks that this is more of a batting friendly wicket. Because in those 3 matches we've had bowlers like Nathan Lyon, Roston Chase, Devendra Bishoo, Jack Leach and Shadab Khan. All of them are quality spinners. Also, Josh Hazelwood and Jofra Archer had taken 5-wicket hauls in the last match played over here which happened to be an Ashes Test. So, yes excluding Leach doesn't make much of a difference. But why should England rely on Root's bowling when they have a potentially world class spinner?

I don't think England would agree that Leach is potentially world class.

We could not make out unless he plays enough. He has done a great job to average 29-odd in FC playing in England.
He plays for Somerset who are notorious for the spin friendly pitches. If Ashwin played there he'd probably take 150 wickets a season.

Good read this. I think Siraj has bowled wonderfully. You always feel like something will happen when he comes on, if only through his passion alone.

Important Test coming up. I think England should do well with the following lineup:

Haseeb
Burns
Malan
Root
Bairstow
O.Pope (is he fit?)
Butler
Moin
S.Curran
S.Mahmood (he could end up with a great debut)
J.Anderson

Harsh on O.Robinson but it's probably because I'm a little biased towards S.Curran. If O.Pope isn't match fit then he would slot right in.

Coming to India, it's gonna be really interesting as Shardul will back in the reckoning and Ashwin will be gunning for a place too. From what I've read, it's gonna help seamers a lot more than spinners, so I'll be surprised if India opt for two spinners. I would like to play the following:

Rohit
Rahul
Pujara
Kohli
Rahane
Pant
Ashwin
S.Thakur
M.Shami
J.Bumrah
M.Siraj

Nothing against Ishant and Jadeja - just feel Ashwin might come in handy on the 4th and 5th day (if the Test goes on till then lol) and Shardul will thrive in the conditions with the added bonus of being able to hold the bat.

But I feel India will remain unchanged and that is fair too.
