Pakistan Tour of South Africa and Zimbabwe - April / May 2021

Again, this game demonstrates what I've been saying for a while about the need to facilitate substitutions in Test matches.

My preferred system would be that each team has to provide a 13-man matchday squad, and can make those two substitutions whenever they like in the Test match, for whatever reason. The idea would of course be that teams would be prepared for injuries and/or concussions, but if they want to blow their subs on tactical switches and then still end up without a replacement for their injured player that's on them.

For example, in this Test Zimbabwe could have had Luke Jongwe and Wellington Masakadza in their matchday squad (as Williams was withdrawn) and then Jongwe comes in to at least make sure that there are eleven fit batsmen to face up against Pakistan.

Instead, we've got a situation where the team that's already at a talent disadvantage is now also at a numerical disadvantage.

Victory loading...
