The PlanetCricket View: Indian Premier League

If the entire world cricket schedule has to stop for IPL then it does need to be the International Premier League and not the Indian Premier League.

I think at some point they need to consider the needs of the rest of the world, anyway. The presentation of IPL is garish and for that alone, it will struggle to penetrate external markets. They also caned their overseas TV rights, so they need to do things to re-interest broadcasters and continue to expand. Accessibility is important to success.

Obviously this is not going to happen for many reasons, but an ideal solution imo would be opening up a two month a year T20 window for every country to run their own domestic T20 league if they want, and then for the other ten months of the year the focus can be on the international game.

I guess something similar to soccer/football, but at the same time it would be the opposite when you consider that their focus is on club, with a couple of months break allowing the likes of Euro and the World Cup to go ahead. And then over the two month domestic T20 window, you could just open up everyone to play anywhere, like what happens with soccer/football in Europe, i.e. you have Spanish players playing in the EPL when the La Liga is going on at the same time.

Yes most of the better players would follow the money and play in the IPL, but it would solve the international window problem, and it would allow the likes of England to create their own EPL style league. Probably the likes of New Zealand don't create their own league in the window, but that wouldn't effect us because atm we've had nothing going on over the IPL period.

Anyway I'm just throwing that idea out there, I've got no idea if it's been previously mentioned somewhere.

Its a legitimate idea for sure and i think its the first time i've seen it thrown out anywhere.

But i don't think that dynamic would suite international cricket, because in football although the world cup is the biggest sporting event, club football is what run things and pays/contracts the players. So it would be easier to have all those leagues all over the world as the forefront of world football - with a small window every two years for the few major international tournament like the euro's, world cup and copa america, african cup of nations.

International cricket is main thing in cricket and national boards contract/pay players.

Plus cricket is unique to other sports in that it has three formats to delegate scheduling around, in which t20's although it is the cash cow - its still the least most prominent format with regards to testing the ultimate skills of a cricketer.

We really don't want to making t20's the # 1 format by having so many leagues around the world.

IPL is the perfect model if revamped to be a international tournament - can have a window and everyone in this small world cricket community can still benefit - although India will gain the most from it.
