The PlanetCricket View: Why I Hate 20/20 Cricket

I agree that the best way to lighten up the schedule is to ditch the 50 over stuff. In the current cricket australia poll, One day cricket is the players least favourite to play and watch. Everyone was calling for no T20Is and just have a world cup, well we can do that for ODIs instead. play a few 3 match ODI series for the year before the world cup to warm up. So far this summer in Australia, the batsman just hit singles from overs 20-35, it is extremely boring and fielding captains are just letting it happen, there is no skill what so ever, so if you remove these 15 overs it becomes a 35 over game so just make it 20/20 and be done with it.

Would you be in favor of getting rid of the 50 over game and just have t20 and tests? That could probably be looked at. Then again the 50 over world cup is highly regarded so how do you get rid of that?

I personally think there should only be 2 forms of international cricket, and my 2nd form would be a kind of combined T20s and ODIs - have a 40 over a side game - maybe with the innings split down the middle so that both sides have to bat under lights, and to give that T20 feel to the 2nd half of the game. To me 20 overs for the whole match is too short, as you often shut players who are batting at 5,6 and 7 out of the game and that's not good because it means teams sometimes use only 8 or 9 players every game. I think all 11 should be used.

Yeah it's pretty tame in the middle overs. 2 things could help solve it:
1) more imaginative captains. I had much more fun watching India vs SL the other day when Jayawardene was keeping 6 men inside the circle in the middle overs, even when the powerplays weren't on. I'd just love to see a fielding team come into an ODI with a Test match style attitude eg. set leg side traps with short legs and leg gullys for guys like Raina who can't play short stuff;
and 2) give the better bowlers more overs. I think that solves the problem of captains trying to get cheap overs out of their 5th bowler in the middle overs. If bowlers could bowl 12-13 overs each, then you shorten that time when teams are just defending since you can use your better bowlers for longer. There's nothing more annoying to me in ODIs than your Dave Hussey types coming on in the middle overs to bowl some quick overs.

And I guess 3) take some overs out of the game so that batsmen feel they don't have to consolidate for too long, and will take risks more regularly.

I support your view @sifter.:spyI even recall that Sachin Tendulkar had proposed this split overs thing in ODIs to the ICC but it was rejected.It sadly fell into deaf ears.....:(

Get back on topic. This is a thread for T20 haters. If you have a morbid dislike of other more legitimate forms of the game eg. 50-over, there is already a thread for that elsewhere. If you're avoiding that thread so as not to make it apparent that you agree with Swanny, why not start a thread of your own (preferably in Jokes forum) :spy

Tests have been around for over 100 years, ODIs for must be getting on 40 years, and yet some people want to fix what ain't broke.

What is broke is the mentality of so called fans, and the excesses of the media/greed that want more cricket for TV, and more action for the lame of brain (to put it bluntly)

Some's views on cricket are akin to wanting Formula 1 to be just five laps, or football pitches to be 50 yards in length, or reducing the biggest worldwide sport to 45 minutes and five-a-side, reducing tennis to one set of five games, or allowing players to throw forwards in rugby with no offside etc.

If people do get their way and see ODIs scrapped or reduced, people will soon get very bored as the cricket will be over in a couple of hours. Might as well all F off and support man utd or citeh.
