Regarding the recent debate on Indian batsmen being selfish for their milestones rather than team victory may seem a subtle point but in-depth its a huge thing, infact the root cause of any team's debacle against teams like Australia and South Africa or any other team on a flying high.
I won't only say this to Indian batsmen, It is infact common here in Sub-continent where players put more weight on personal performances than the overall team victory and that is because of our selection system and one can't put extra blame on the players. A new Pakistani batsman will be more concerned about his position first than the team victory because he knows that if he didn't perform well in two consecutive ODIS he will be thrown out, Hell We have a history of throwing out emerging and some very high quality players little examples are Basit Ali, Yasir Hameed, Ali Naqvi, Shahid Saeed, Shahid Nazir and a lot of others so what is the guarantee of a brand new player? How would he survive?
Indian system is still lot better than here, They don't change their captain for years, Their players ins and out must be lot lot better than ours, then why they are more concerned about records? It may well be the reason because of their glamorus B Industry and over-hyped media stuff plus a lot of money is involved i.e. Extra Commercialization, Extra Attention etc.. Indian media and Commentators has always given more importance to individuals and their records than the team itself as a whole unit and this view has translated into their fans, and that is why against big teams It may be quite entrenched in the players mindset that scoring a ton or double ton is more than the team victory.
Even players like Dravid and Tendulkar weren't save from this as I remember when Tendulkar was about to reach a triple ton/double ton (Not remember the figure exactly) and Dravid called for declaration, So on the same evening Tendulkar did the press conference claiming that Dravid didn't want that his record should be broken....
It is unfortunate and pity for subcontinent teams but it is not an ir-recoverable loss. Adopt the big teams system culture and you would be right up there.
Coming specifically to current Indian losses to Australia, The selfishness isn't the whole thing, The major onus here is on power bowling and captain unable to leading from the front with the bat.. In my view
