It's hard for AMD fans, but it has happened.Intel's core Duo are simply too great for AMD to catch up.In fact, the performance of Core Duo's is so much great that it's launch has made every piece of chip out there obselete.
Heck, the lowest of them, Intel Core 2 Duo E6300, which is a about $183, gives more performance that any of the older intel chips.it even matches AMD 64 X2 4600+ in many tests, and beats it too.Considering the fact that AMD plans to cut prices of this processor to $301, u can judge what a big problem AMD has on its hands.
Core Duo's have been benchmarked by Anandtech at this url:
http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2795
however, for those who can't wade through all that gibberish, this is what the article says:
these core duo's are in five flavours:
Intel Core 2 Extreme X6800 2.93GHz 4MB $999
Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 2.66GHz 4MB $530
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.40GHz 4MB $316
Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 2.13GHz 2MB $224
Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 1.86GHz 2MB $183
the X6800 is spl, namely because it's an extreme batch.Intel say's that extreme batch processors have larger caches, a faster FSB, Hyper Threading support, and/or higher clock speeds.i.e. they are better than the rest.
Also, extreme series will have unlocked multipliers, i.e., they are, in layman terms, good for overclocking.
onto the test, all CD ( core duo) consume less or equivalent power as the AMD lineup.
in tests the top two CD perform about 30- 15% better than AMD's top of the line AMD's 64 FX-X2.the E6600 CD giving performance same or slightly more than than this baby.
E6300 CD performance is little hard to describe. In many tests, it gives performance equivanent to AMD 4600+, howvever it falls in the lower catagory and it's safe to say that it beats 64 X2 4200+ consistantly.
the problem with AMD is the fact that their next lineup of processors are all slated to release in various quarters of year 2007, and by that time who knows what intel comes up with.Intel already plans to release Kentsfield in Q1 next year, which will be a Core 2 Extreme branded quad core CPU from Intel.:o
And u thought that there would be a "Return of AMD" sequel?
