IPL IPL Player Auction 2011

bargains of the day

Duminy. man can kill in twenty20. has demolished international opponents and teams in the IPL. 300,000 is a steal for someone that could easily top the run scoring charts and win games single handed.

Mishra. Very economical spinner, 300,000 for someone that will start and contribute in every match, and leave overseas spots free, is a great deal.

Jacobs. 190 for an all-round inspirational figure. gun fielder too.

graeme smith - 500,000 is a third of the price that jayawardene went for and smith is arguably the more accomplished limited over accumulator.

wastes of money

Saurabh Tiwary - I rate this guy, I think there are shades of KP about his style, and if he develops india will have a top batsmen that can play all-formats. but 1.6 million for someone who is still getting to grips with their game is stupid.

Pathan - sure he's an all-rounder, a fast bowling one too, and indian, but he can't do them that well to justify being one of the most expensive players in the tournament. injury prone too.

jayawardena - just not a solid enough t20 player to be the most expensive foreign player in the tournament.

callum ferguson - 300,000 for a guy that's been injured for over a year and is a slow builder in ODIs. no idea what that's about.

Not sure how to fetch such stats from cricinfo, but Vettori's more accomplished.
Not saying that he's not good enough, but the IPL teams don't really need overseas specialist spinners.Your man will most probably be bought tomorrow,so heads up mate. :p

I don't want him to play hit and giggle cricket, I'm happy he wasn't bought. I want to watch him playing in the county championship in cricket that actually matters, as I've mentioned before.

Can't believe both KKD and Nayar went to Punjab. ARGH.

----------

Morne Morkel for 475k is an absolute steal. So is JP for $300k! Chennai should have bounced on at least one of those.
But remember guys, we cannot tell the strength of the side from the auction alone. We all remember how stacked DC and KKR were after the 1st auction and how badly they ended up doing in Season 1 (and 3).

From a Chennai perspective, i'm happy we retained the bulk of our players. Dougie, Badri, and Ashwin were all an integral part of our victories this year. I would have sprung for Gayle, and maybe 1.1 odd mill would have been worth it for Kallis too. But we are again in the same position where we don't have many medium pacers at all. Hope we can turn that around tomorrow.

Dwayne Bravo was a good pick at $200k. He's done well for Mumbai in all depts.

Good thinking by CSK because even if teams have great players, they do take time to get going together, CSK have most of their players from last 3 season, so won't be difficult to adjust in with other new players.

Disagree about Mishra. While the deal may look good to people who have watched Mishra in the IPL and perhaps in Indian colours, Mishra has been shite all domestic season. Can't buy a wicket atm. Might get wickets in the T20 format, but yeah, is terribly out of form. And, I believe he went to Deccan who already bought Ojha. Could be a good spin duo, but if Mishra isn't his usual self, could end up being quite costly for Deccan.

Agree strongly about Jacobs. You have a guy who can keep wicket, open the innings and was gun in the last Champions League. Great value for money there.

Saurabh Tiwary is an interesting case. Expected him to go for quite the sum, but not as much as 1.6M. Perhaps it was his performances in IPL 3 that inspired the bid from RCB. He's still the unfinished product though, and could flop big time. Also not had the best of domestic seasons, but missed a good number of games warming the benches for India.

The thing I hate the most after seeing the auction today is that there are so much good players not playing for their home teams. The last few seasons teams have been trading around to get back their home players, and a lot of sides consisted of players from their local regions. It's definitely going to be odd seeing Dravid turn out for Rajasthan. Props to Chennai for making an effort to retain their winning combination. Retaining batsmen seemed to be the right move in the end as the bowlers turned out to be not so expensive.

Lots of puzzling moves in the auction today though. Piyush Chawla costing more than Ashwin, Irfan Pathan's ridiculous 1.9M fee, when he's currently injured and no one knows when he'll be back for sure and high fees for the likes of Gilly and Symonds who surely aren't worth as much as they were bid for at this stage of their careers. Punjab and Kochi, especially, seem to have no idea about whom they really want. Some teams like Chennai(with their buying back familiar player strategy) and Bangalore(who targetted certain players, and got most of them at very good prices - Vettori 550k and Dilshan 650k are absolute bargains) were more aware about how to go about these auctions, and may end up benefiting massively from their preparation.

Anyway, hoping ten Doeschate gets a bid tomorrow, and very interested to see where the high-in-demand uncapped players end up. The likes of Pandey, Rayudu, Rahane, Trivedi, Jhunjhunwala, R Satish, Mukund and Chahar should definitely interest a lot of teams. Since their fees aren't high, it wouldn't be a surprise if most these players end up at their home teams(if they got offered contracts of course).

The main thing for Chennai is that they have ensured that their team will continue to have a strong core of local players. International stars can win a tournament, but at the end of the day, there are only ever 4 of them in your team.

For example, Deccan picked some good names on the international front, but at any one time there's a 40% chance of them having 1 million on the bench.

Any person has a list that sorts it out by team? Cricinfo has it, but I cant sort it for some reason.

1-
2-Sangakkara
3-Cam White
4-Pietersen/Duminy
5-
6-Dhawan
7-
8-Steyn
9-Mishra
10-Ishant Sharma
11-Ojha

I'm OK with Deccan's team.

Good bowling, but sorely lacking in Indian batsmen.

Chennai better pick up Satish. He is a gun, plus local talent. Turned out for Mumbai last time who would want to keep him now that Nayar is gone.

So far for CSK

1.
2. Murali Vijay
3. Albie Morkel
4. Subramanium Badrinath
5. MS Dhoni
6. Michael Hussey <- He's been good but I don't think he should be a definite starter for us...
7. Dwayne Bravo
8. R Ashwin
9. Dougie Bollinger
10.
11.

Not bad. I expect them to keep Balaji. Could use some more international fire power though, a guy like Davey Jacobs could have been a huge buy for us.

Really like the look of Bangalore's team. I might have to switch allegiances now, I'm Kannada anyway :p. But I don't think I will. They have been smart. I think Kohli would have gotten in the region of 1.8m anyways seeing how guys like Tiwary and Uthappa have sold. Can't believe Rahul Dravid is going to turn out for a non-Bangalore team though. Going to be weird as hell.

I hate this. Gambhir for Kolkatta, wtf? He was Delhi's captain last year. They must be kicking themselves, really should have retained him.

Deccan's mistakes IMO;

-Not getting Yuvraj or Yusuf. You can't win with only 3 elite batsmen.

-Didn't get Zaheer either. Maybe they didn't get Yuvraj or Yusuf b/c they didn't want to spend 2 mil+ on one player, but there's no reason to not get Zaheer. Would have only taken 1 mil, and having him with Steyn, Mishra, Ojha would have made Deccan's bowling the best in the IPL.

Plus points, IMO;

-Getting Sanga. Just 700K for a good batsmen, good wicketkeeper, and probable captain? I'm in.

-Getting both Mishra and Ojha for a combined 1 million or so. 2 reliable Indian spinners for just 1/9 of your budget is a bargain.

lol I won't recognize the teams anymore. Is there a video of the auctions anywhere online? (pm please).
