Munster Maulers v Ulster Shamrocks
So, a week on from the first match of the RSA Provincial Shield, and we're here in Clontarf for the second installment: the much-fancied Munster Maulers take on Ulster Shamrocks. Munster, however are quite light for the longer format because they are without Joyce, O'Brien, Porterfield or Wilson, all of whom are engaged in county cricket. With so little batting to call on, it will e difficult to get the runs that their veteran bowling attack will be able to defend. Against them are Ulster's Shamrocks, who lack star quality but look a solid team.

The visitors won the toss, and in overcast conditions, and Andrew White decided to bowl first. This looked like a bad move, as the Munster opening pair put on 69 and Ulster's bowlers plugged away for 21 overs without a wicket. But it was the 22nd over, bowled by the captain himself, that brought rewards. Having brought Phil Eaglestone into the attack, Andrew White's team immediately captured Jeremy Bray caught behind. White then claimed back-to-back wickets to pull his team back into the game. After the break, White continued to be in the wickets, reducing the Maulers to 213/7. Just as things were looking very rough, Shane Getkate and Kevon Cooper, both on first class debut, put together a stable partnership to get up to a respectable total.
On the back of five-bags for both Eaglestone and White, Ulster's batsmen continued the positive momentum. Another debutant, James Shannon, notched up a classy half-century at an eye-popping strike rate. although wickets kept falling at the other end, he kept a sense of momentum flowing through the innings. Once he was dismissed, Chamu Chibhabha and the skipper became the second and third batsmen to pass 50. At 230/6, thigs could still have gone either way, but some sensible batting from Rory McCann with the tail pushed the visitors past Munster and then past 300.
With only a small deficit to overturn, Munster had an opportunity to push for a matchwinning position, but it was Ulster who enforced the upper hand. The Shamrocks bowled as a unit, Peter Connell partnering Abbott's pace very effectively. When Max Sorensen and Albert van der Merwe started taking wickets too, the two heroes of the first innings only ended up bowling eight and a half overs between them. Indeed, Munster's weak batting lineup was saved from total ignominy only by a stubborn innings from Kenny Carroll and another rear-guard from Shane Getkate. However, going an entire match without a half-century certainly says something.
So, with only 151 to win and a day and a half to get them in, the only thing in Ulster's way would be rain. None came, and after a belligerent innings from Chibhabha, Abbott and White batted well together in an unbeaten partnership of 64. Munster will certainly have to find space for Terry Duffin in the next match if they want to stay in contention.
