After yesterday's Provincial Shield match, Stormont cricket ground was in use again, this time as the scene of the warmup match between Scotland and an Irish Board XI. The Board XI fielded a young side, which lacks any experience of high-level one-day cricket. The board showed faith in one of their young talents, George Dockrell, who has been selected to lead this development team.

The match was a low-key affair, but it was nonetheless an opportunity for some of Irish cricket's less celebrated sons to prove a point to the selectors. Perhaps this got to them somewhat, because they showed little inclination to take risks, even in such a short game. Indeed, throughout the eight overs of field restrictions, the Board XI scored at under three runs per over, and lost four wickets in the process. In all fairness, Matthew Parker and Gordon Drummond bowled particularly well, but a poor innings never really got going. From such a poor start, it was always going to be difficult to get the innings jump-started. Balbirnie couldn't hit the ball off the square, and Shane Getkate looked all at sea in the nine balls he faced. The only man to show any composure was Niall McDonnell, who held the innings together with 39 not out, and even managed to clear the ropes when Buchan strayed off-line.
The Scotsmen had an easy target to chase, but that didn't stop Ryan Flannigan playing his shots. His quick 25 was important, making good use of the restrictions with quick running and the occasional big shot. Phil Eaglestone knew his job, and produced five rhythmical overs with the new ball, but on the back of him the Irish side had little to give. Ewan Chalmers scored a composed 27, and Calum MacLeod backed up his reputation for big hitting with a six to finish the run chase. It was an easy warm-up for the touring side, and their solid team effort made light work of the Irish youngsters.
However, even the most trivial of matches can have big consequences. Young up-and-coming wicketkeeper Craig Wallace broke a finger while taking a catch early on in the game, but carried on for the full 25 overs. When he got back into the changing room, his finger was found to be badly broken, putting him out of cricket for several weeks. If he is lucky, he may be back for Scotland's match against Connacht, but Scotland have drafted Calvin Burnett into the squad for the duration of the competition.

So, this is it. The big game. The decider of the RSA Provincial Shield. Leinster are second in the table, and have to win this match outright to clinch the title. Munster are out of the running, but could have a decisive impact on the outcome of the competition. Both teams are unchanged going into this match, showing faith in the tried and tested.

On winning the toss, Munster captain Kyle McCallan decided to play to his team's strengths and bowl first. Unfortunately for him, his bowlers struggled to make early inroads as Chris Murtagh made an attacking 70, flaying the ball to all parts. Just as he looked certain to extend the century partnership towards the tea break, wily Trent Johnston struck. Poynter was joined by Cusack, and they shepherded the innings past the tea break without further incident. Poynter got out shortly after reaching his half-century, and his dismissal sparked a Hondo-led revival for Munster. The Zimbabwean seamer took four wickets, and all of a sudden Leinster were flagging on 260/8. Cusack, who had been at the non-striker's end for each of these wickets, played around a straight Kyle McCallan delivery on 65, and Leinster were all out for no further score.
However, Munster's reply never got started as Abdur Razzak struck back with a vengeance. He claimed the wickets of Kenny Carroll, James Hall, Tom Beaton, Thinus Fourie, Trent Johnston and Shane Getkate, all before they had reached 20. With such a vast swathe of your batting lineup sliced out, it is always difficult to make any kind of total, and this was no exception. Veterans, Jeremy Bray and Kyle McCallan did their best to keep the innings afloat, but the Maulers looked rather tame and were bundled out with a deficit of 105 runs.
With such a commanding position, Leinster could really cut loose. Poynter and Murtagh both made aggressive twenties, but it was the brutal batting of Kieran Noema-Barnett that really stood up to be counted. His 63 came at a strike rate of almost 90, and was scattered with boundaries. Support from Jahurul Islam (49) and Nigel Jones (34) meant that when the Lions were bowled out, courtesy of a second Hondo 4-for, the target for Munster would be an unattainable 391 to win, or a barely more plausible five sessions to bat for a draw.
Just because they had the upper hand, Alex Cusack's team weren't assured of the title. To get that, they would still have to bowl out the Munster batsmen. It was well within their capabilities. Nigel Jones and Alex Cusack made a dream start, dismissing both openers quickly, before Roger Whelan removed No. 4 James Hall. Two overseas recruits managed to stop the rot for a while, Duffin and Beaton putting on 71 before they were each dismissed by their 82nd delivery, both to Abdur Razzak. After that, the only brif resistance came from Fourie and Johnston, but after Cusack removed them both, there was little left. Munster didn't even cross the 150 mark, and Leinster won at a canter, clinching the inaugural RSA Shield.
Next time you hear from Ireland will be for the VW Super40, a competition that will be star-studded by all the leading Irish players, and Leinster won't have such an easy time of it then...
