I have just watched Kumble apeal for an LBW to a leggie that pitched 6 inches outside off and turned. Is that cheating? There were plenty who called Ponting a cheat for appealing for a catch that he thought he had caught cleanly. Kumble knew what he had bowled, a leg spinner turning away from the wickets, he knew where it landed, 6 inches outside the off stump and still he appealed. This is closer to cheating then Pontings I would suggest.
Having played cricket for more then 30 years I have been involved in any number of half appeals for LBW, that have been choked of before they begin. These arise from a hope, but are quickly dampened by the certain knowledge that it wasn't out and generally an appology to the umpire. Sure I have had plenty where I thought the umpire was wrong, both as a batsman and a bowler, but I never went through with any that were blatantly not out.
The players of today tend to appeal for everything and the home associations and the ICC must enable the umpires to penalise teams that do this. The endless appeals are a blight on the game and in cases like this one are to be abhored by all cricketers and followers of the game. Teams that continuously appeal for rubbish should be penalised where it really hurts, on the score board. The rubbish of taking a proportion of their match fees is a spit in the bucket to current players. Most make their money of the field through sponserships etc.
