Latest News of Greg Chappel

Thats now like trying to get out of intense media criticism by twisting the whole issue... whenever saurav or kolkatta is concerned, chappell gets into big controversies.

Well I was bit surprised why was Kolkatta fans supporting SA and cheering for them when Smith was on fire. LoL!!!

Oh come on... you can't talk about banning an ENTIRE stadium! This isn't the first time this has happened you know?

In recent times:

WI Test tour of India 2002 at ****hede, Mumbai: The North Stand got into a terrible row with Merv Dillon. They were yelling all sorts of expletives at him and this was during his game! Merv retaliated with his finger too... (it wasnt caught on camera though, but i was there in person watching it from the next stand!)

Pak Test tour of India 2005 at Bangalore: The match that Pak won to tie the series that everyone expected India to win. The crowds booed the captain and team to kingdom come.

No one said anything then, did they?

You can't blame crowds at Eden Gardens, they came to watch the much hyped team atleast put up a challenge to the Proteas. The Indian performance was depressing to say the least. What do you expect when you have so many Indian Cricket fans in the same place?

But this is not the first time that its happening at the Eden Gardens. You have to be sportive and there's no second thoughts abt it... Yes, we have to fight in the game. But do you think we didnt have the fire and the hunger when we played? Nothing went our way yesterday at the Eden Gardens! One thing that was sure is, the Kolkatta crowd cried for their hero Saurav, thats all.

Didnt they learn the lesson from Chennai who stood up and appreciated the Pakistanis for winning by so narrow a margin of 10 runs in the 1999 test? Do you think the Chennai crowd are not passionate abt their cricket? We are in fact as much passionate as any one else is abt Indian cricket. Yet we stood up, applauded the opposition. In the 2004 test against Australia which was rained off due to rain, Shane Warne became a huge star with the crowd when the crowd constantly cheered him....

I thought he wouldnt do all this.. but anyway, i am sure he did that because of those irritating crowd who constantly booed him. i am terribly unhappy with these protesting kolkatta crowd who have places saurav ganguly before indian cricket! shameless idiots (those who protested!). Chappell is absolutely right in doing what he did. I would have got down, went closer to the mob and pointed that 'holy' finger!
Thats a terrible post !!! No matter wats the reason, never would the news that some foreign guy pointing a middle finger at an Indian, make me feel happy in any way & 'shameless idiots' is a strong word to use ...

BTW sai & the rest, what in the world has sourav done so wrong to make you guys react so rudely to any news concerning him or his supporters..

He remains the best ever Indian captain & one of the classiest left handers India has EVER produced...He lifted a crappy Indian team plagued by match-fixing scandals to one of the top ODI & test teams..

He was instrumental in bringing in John Wright & blooding youngsters like yuvraj, kaif & sehwag who are the performers today..

You guys are jumping the gun too early..lets see our Mr Dravid taking our 'golden boys' outside the sub-continent & doing anything worth mentioning.

Let me mention that I have had nothing against Saurav Ganguly. But I am against his supporters protesting his exclusion by booeing Chappell. It seems they were constantly booeing him in Kolkatta whenever they got the chance. Do you know how irritating it is when you are booed for no fault of yours? What Chappell did was right. He as a coach is interested in the team doing well, thats all. He asked Ganguly to sit out to have youngsters in the team who are the future. He sent that mail to the BCCI because of his concern for the team. That the BCCI cleverly and cunningly covered it by saying 'it was a miscommunication' doesnt make Chappell a liar! The BCCI have been liars.

I too believe that Ganguly had his success touching his head! But now I am satisfied with his domestic performances and strongly feel he should come back which he is with the test series. But I wont react in a negative manner if the Chappell finger pointing incident is true! He is not a Rahul Dravid to be a gentleman and keep quiet and not react to such unfair criticism!

Rahul Dravid has shown good promise as a captain! When Dravid took over, Indian cricket was at its worst end where they couldnt even win home series (they had won their last home series way back in 2002!). He has been instrumental in changing that with his first full fledged bilateral series as captain! If he can keep up the good work and stay on ground, I dont see why he cant lead us to glory abroad! Saurav can still be a vital cog to our team when he comes to touring abroad! But if he doesnt be captain, it doesnt mean that Dravid will fail. Remember, Saurav's majority of the success as captain was due to Dravid's contributions as a batsman and his selfless help as a vice captain!

oh cmon! If Chappel was the one who decided on this line up and to send Pathan opening, then they have every right to boo! :mad

Thanks Andrew Nixon and Saisrini for explaining about the part of the Bengalis. But still you could have used other words to express your feelings.

I actually don't see banning Eden Gardens for some period of time as that bad of an idea. It's one way of knocking sportsmanship into their heads. Just recently when Pakistan came for the one-off match against India, the crowd was silent to a wonderful innings by Salman Butt (was it?). In the past, this crowd has burned down the benches and whatnot. Yesterday they were cheering South Africa and not India. Just because it is the biggest stadium in India does not mean that they have the right to do things like that.

And for heaven's sake, Bengal (or maybe West BEngal) is a state in India, so people from there are called Bengali. Anyone from India would know that and anyone confused should have got the picture with the tiniest bit of research.

Who are they to boo Chappell if he makes a mistake in a strategy formulated by the team? They have the right to boo only when they are part of those strategical planning that the team does before the match! Not all strategies work. Some work and some dont! Just becoz it didnt work does not give the crowd the right to ask Chappell to go back!

ITS A CROWD! You can't expect a disappointed mass of thousands of people to be reasonable... we should be glad they didnt start a riot

How does anyone know they were booing out of support for Ganguly? Maybe its out of sheer disappointment due the teams performance.

And how can u say with such conviction that the crowds were supporting south africa? Maybe its because they were appreciating good batting by Smith on a of terrible batting performances.

Here is some more information and a picture about it. No doubt it's his middle one.

Extracting the digit

Not even Billy Bowden's crooked finger has attracted as much media attention as Greg Chappell's alleged single-finger gesture in Kolkata. The crowd turned on India in the fourth ODI, cheered every boundary by South Africa, and chanted support for Sourav Ganguly, who had been replaced as Test captain by Rahul Dravid earlier in the week, and Chappell was seen on TV apparently giving a one-finger salute out of the window of the team bus to a group of protestors. Chappell, who has not enjoyed the best relationship with the Indian public in his time as coach, strenuously denied any wrongdoing, and a board spokesman explained that "Chappell had injured his finger during practice and he said he was just attending to it." By sticking it out of the window to give it some fresh air, presumably? The salute made the headlines and featured heavily on the news as well. Nobody ever pretended being India's coach was easy. But Chappell shouldn't feel too put upon. New captain Rahul Dravid and demigod Sachin Tendulkar were also booed by sections of the crowd at the post-match presentations.

I agree with Sai that Kolkata can be banned for a year or two to make it clear to them that it is cricket tht comes first . You cannot bully a cricket board into selecting a player from your state . It in fact makes it all the more embarassing for Sourav who I think would like to come back with good performances under his belt .
I don`t believe that `passion` is the word to use for the kolkata fans` behaviour in the past few weeks and over the years . They feel that they rule Indian cricket and can get away with everything they do .
Kolkata may be India`s biggest cricket venue but they do not deserve the title of `The home of Asian Cricket .
If burning effigies, benches in the stadiums means passion , cricket matchs all over the world will be interrupted .
Does that mean that Chennai crowds are less passionate about their game ? No. In fact the Chennai crowd is the most sporting in the country and that is how crowds should be .
However, I do not support Chappel`s gesture . He had become quite popular with Indian fans with the recent wins but this gesture will again cast its shadow .

I'm not asking chappel to go back! But, he's getting into so many controvercy's! Well, whenever ganguly tried a "Strategy" and it didn't work people took it out on him! When Ganguly chose to field on the World Cup final and we ended up losing badly, everyone critisised ganguly! Coming back to the Chappell thing, why whould anyone want to risk so much by sending Pathan opening on such an important series winning game?
