Judging by his figures, he was a pretty decent leggie too. Would have come in more handy in the current era than the one he played in when WI had a plethora of spin legends.
He was an attacker by nature and his bowling was no different. Too bad for him the part timers at that time where only expected to bowl defensively and leave the job of bowling attacking line and lengths to the main bowlers. Yes, he would have fared much better in modern day cricket of OD and T20. That said, he was just about okay bowler, not too good. He was no mean fielder btw. I have heard people talking about him that he had an uncanny habit of throwing the ball underarm towards the keeper/bowler from the boundary on once bounce. Imagine the muscle power he had. Great batsman, handy bowler and good outfielder. All that without any proper coaching. Priceless.
