Wally Hammond and David Gower recorded fifties, while the usually patient Len Hutton played a surprisingly aggressive knock of 40 off just 29 balls at the top. Charlie Turner starred with the ball for Australia, picking 5 wickets although at a high cost of 100 runs from his 23 overs.

England appeared favorites to win after having reduced Australia to 192/8 with only one specialist batsman remaining, and could have done so too if that batsman had been anyone other than Allan Border. The latter's sheer determination saw him guide Australia to a thrilling 1-wicket victory and a place in the Season X final with a marvelous unbeaten 108 off 159 balls. It's not yet over for England though - they still have another chance of making the final should they happen to prevail in the semi-final.

Having held the upper hand at one stage when they had reduced New Zealand to 157/5, Pakistan failed to press home the advantage by allowing John R Reid to stage a recovery with a brilliant century from No 7. He found some good support from skipper Brendon McCullum, who went past 50 for the first time in 11 innings in the competition. New Zealand finished with a very respectable first innings lead of 122 runs.

Another all-too-familiar top order collapse followed in the second innings, and Pakistan appeared headed towards an almost certain defeat but for Javed Miandad playing an innings for the ages. The man who helped them vanquish the tournament favorites West Indies in their previous match went one better this time with an unbeaten 166 off 323 balls out of a total of 357, thereby setting New Zealand a target of 236. It may not sound like much, but Pakistan's powerful bowling attack managed to defend a similar score against Ireland earlier in the tournament.

Martin Donnelly, the elegant southpaw scored a tournament best 67 off 113 balls and looked set to guide New Zealand to victory before being undone by the brilliance of Wasim Akram. - Silver. Used for players that aren't as talented as their Gold/Ruby/Legend contemporaries, but still capable of holding their own against the best in business.
- Bronze. Used for players that are a level below Silver. They are more likely to put in good performances than players from the Sapphire/Crystal category.
- Sapphire/Crystal. Used for players that are inexperienced or with a lower skill set compared to those from a higher category. They could either put in good performances or fail miserably.

Explanation on pitch types

Damp/Sticky - Massively in favor of bowlers and an absolute nightmare to bat on, unless you're Victor Trumper.
Dusty - Plenty of turn on offer for spinners and a good place to bat for spin-savvy batsmen. Good pace bowlers are still likely to thrive.
Evenly balanced - Provides an evenly balanced contest for all disciplines.
Flat - A batsman-friendly pitch which provides little or no assistance to bowlers. Expect big totals.
Green - A lot of movement on offer early on, which makes it ideal for bowlers capable of swinging the ball. Batting expected to become easier as the match progresses.
Hard - Ideal conditions for batting. Good deal of bounce on offer for fast bowlers as well. Could go either way
Dry/Slow - Ideal for slow and spin bowlers as the name suggests. Sometimes quite difficult to bat on.
Poor - Uneven bounce and a huge amount of turn on offer for spinners. Expect a slow hard grind where most batsmen rarely score at above 2 an over.​
