Player rarities

In each squad, players have been marked with these icons to give you a fair idea of their playing skills and overall usefulness to your team.

- Legend. Used for the players that are undoubtedly the best of the lot.
- Gold. Used for players with a high level of consistency and ability to deliver during key moments.
- Ruby. Used for players that are extremely talented and can play in a way no one else can replicate.
- Silver. Used for players that aren't as talented as their Gold/Ruby/Legend contemporaries, but still capable of holding their own against the best in business.

Explanation on pitch types

Dusty - Plenty of turn on offer for spinners and a good place to bat for spin-savvy batsmen. Good pace bowlers are still likely to thrive.
Evenly balanced - Provides an evenly balanced contest for all disciplines.
Flat - A batsman-friendly pitch which provides little or no assistance to bowlers. Expect big totals.
Green - A lot of movement on offer, which makes it ideal for bowlers capable of swinging the ball.
Hard - Ideal conditions for batting. Good deal of bounce on offer for fast bowlers as well. Could go either way.
Dry/Slow - Ideal for slow and spin bowlers as the name suggests. Sometimes quite difficult to bat on.​

They had no Sachin Tendulkar, no Ricky Ponting and no Kumar Sangakkara in their lineup. They even lost the prolific Alastair Cook for a first-ball duck at the very start of their innings. That's when Graeme Smith and Rahul Dravid stood up to be counted by sharing a huge 212-run partnership to put the Twenty20 Era XI in a brilliant position. Dravid provided a Test match batting masterclass with his 150 off 339 balls.

Well, it's not nearly as bad as someone sending Malcolm Marshall, Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh in the top 7, while demoting batting legends such as George Headley, Frank Worrell and Everton Weeks to Nos 8, 9 & 10 respectively. I don't think anyone can ever top that.

Many of the Interwar XI's batsmen got off to very good starts on a brilliant wicket for batting, but threw it away with some poor selection, including Don Bradman who scored only 82. But their lower-order managed to add a further 176 for the last 4 wickets after they had been reduced to 269/6. Les Ames and Harold Larwood cashed in with a couple of very useful half-centuries to their names.

Some of the Interwar XI's batsmen seemed a bit over-cautious in their approach with the pitch beginning to deteriorate as the match progressed. It was evident in the way George Headley and Charles Macartney, two generally aggressive batsmen, grinded out a couple of very sedate half-centuries by their standards. WG Grace, the greatest of the greats from Test cricket's first decade of existence rose up to the occasion with a marvelous 126 off 287 balls. It was the good doctor's first LAB century since Season IV, thus bringing an end to a very lean period for him.

But despite his efforts, the Early Test XI eventually failed to escape with a draw when Argentine bowling legend Clem Gibson claimed the wicket of Fred Spofforth just moments before the umpires could call it stumps on the final day. The Interwar XI had quite thrillingly prevailed by a 174-run margin.

Having elected to bat first upon winning the toss, the Post-war XI were given a torrid time by Curtly Ambrose and Wasim Akram on a pitch that had a lot more life in it than expected. The pair combined to pick 8 of the 10 wickets to fall during the innings, with Ambrose claiming 4 for 50 from 23 overs and Akram 4 for 48 from 21.

Finally, after having endured his most miserable run of form since this league's inception, Shane Warne was back to his best. He picked 5 for 45 from 27 overs, conceding at just above a run an over during a marvelous display of leg spin bowling. The Post-war XI had set their opponents a very achievable target of 215 with the best part of 2 days remaining in the match.

They very nearly made a total mess of it, but for Adam Gilchrist's heroic knock of 63 off just 74 balls. The explosive left-hander took them to a victory which seemed very unlikely when they were reduced to 151/8 at one stage. He added 40 runs for the 9th wicket alongside Curtly Ambrose, who obediently rotated the strike while blocking out the Post-war XI's bowlers during his 41-ball stay for only 7 runs. Things got a little more tricky when he was dismissed by Alan Davidson, leaving the Professional XI to depend on Glenn McGrath's batting skills for survival once again.

But once again, he didn't disappoint and hung on for 9 deliveries which was enough for Gilchrist to see the job done. The Professional XI had brought up their first victory of the competition after having endured two very close draws. So ended perhaps the most thrilling game of cricket this league has ever seen; the only serious rival being the match between Australia A and Pakistan in Season V, which the Australians had won by a 1-run margin.

Player rarities

In each squad, players have been marked with these icons to give you a fair idea of their playing skills and overall usefulness to your team.

- Legend. Used for the players that are undoubtedly the best of the lot.
- Gold. Used for players with a high level of consistency and ability to deliver during key moments.
- Ruby. Used for players that are extremely talented and can play in a way no one else can replicate.
- Silver. Used for players that aren't as talented as their Gold/Ruby/Legend contemporaries, but still capable of holding their own against the best in business.

Explanation on pitch types

Dusty - Plenty of turn on offer for spinners and a good place to bat for spin-savvy batsmen. Good pace bowlers are still likely to thrive.
Evenly balanced - Provides an evenly balanced contest for all disciplines.
Flat - A batsman-friendly pitch which provides little or no assistance to bowlers. Expect big totals.
Green - A lot of movement on offer, which makes it ideal for bowlers capable of swinging the ball.
Hard - Ideal conditions for batting. Good deal of bounce on offer for fast bowlers as well. Could go either way.
Dry/Slow - Ideal for slow and spin bowlers as the name suggests. Sometimes quite difficult to bat on.​
