However, the sheer pressure of the situation eventually got to them as a couple of costly errors from Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni allowed the New Zealanders to escape with a 1-wicket victory.

Once again, Neil Johnson proved what a valuable player he was for Zimbabwe with a well struck 67 off 66 balls from the top of the order after having opened the bowling for his team with moderate success. Zimbabwe suffered a few hiccups following his dismissal, but their lower-order featuring Duncan Fletcher, Heath Streak and Graeme Cremer held firm to see the job through with 3 overs to spare. They bowled out of the tournament with a victory over Bangladesh, who failed to win anything other than the preliminary match against Canada which helped them qualify for the main draw.

For a while, with Saeed Anwar and Zaheer Abbas batting like an absolute dream, it seemed Pakistan would pull off quite a heist against the Australians in their own backyard. But Glenn McGrath, the old miser crashed their party by claiming the wicket of Abbas for 91 and that of Inzamam-ul-Haq the very next ball for a golden duck, all while conceding runs at only 4.50 per over in a match where everyone else routinely went for rates between 5-6 per over.
Javed Miandad helped spark a brief resurgence alongside Sarfraz Ahmed with a quickfire 76-run stand for the 5th wicket, which was fortuitously brought to an end by Brett Lee during his follow through in the 43rd over. Pakistan lost wickets regularly afterwards and eventually that of Miandad in the penultimate over to Mitchell Starc, which proved to the the final nail in the coffin. They finished 11 runs short of Australia's total upon completing their 50-over quota, thus bringing their 5-match unbeaten streak to an end while extending Australia's streak to 5 victories on the trot since an unexpected loss to New Zealand in the first round of the tournament.
