There was very little to gain from this dead rubber clash with all Super Sixes berths having been confirmed, save for TLC's pride as they endeavoured to finish with at least one victory to show for their efforts to cap off a disastrous campaign. They channeled that desire in their early efforts by reducing The Baker Street Boys to a precarious 110/5 courtesy of a probing opening spell from Ray Lindwall, who managed to get rid of both Sachin Tendulkar and Kane Williamson for not too many. Thereafter, their efforts slacked off with Graeme Pollock staging a recovery alongside Kapil Dev by putting up 94 runs for the 6th wicket, which was only ended when Graeme Swann got Pollock out stumped for 70. Swann would finish with figures of 5 for 56 off his 10 overs reducing the Boys to 233/9, only for their last wicket pair of Rashid Khan and Sydney Barnes to add a further 30 runs and bolster them to 263.

All notions of pride seemingly vanished when TLC found themselves in yet another wreck, tottering at 75/5 with most of their specialist batters back in the pavilion. With their chase dead and buried following George Headley's dismissal by Kapil Dev at 128/6, there was very little reason to believe they could even come close let alone within touching distance of their target. But one man still believed, and he was Andrew Symonds who spent most season shunted all the way down at No 7, but came to the rescue today with a Herculean innings of 109 off 111 balls. Mixing risk with caution, and also helped by some truly shambolic fielding from the Boys' towards the close, he expertly marshaled the lower-order to get TLC within one hit of victory in the final over where only five runs were required with Sydney Barnes bowling. Ideally, he ought to have risked finishing the game with a six off the first ball rather than hand the strike back to the lesser batter in Carst Posthuma who struggled to pick Barnes' variations. While Posthuma did eventually hand him back the strike with 3 required off 2 balls, Barnes proved simply too clever to get away off the final two deliveries - eventually getting Symonds to hole out to the long on boundary in gut-wrenching fashion. TLC's dream to finish with a win was all but diminished.
