Malinga retires from test cricket.

Malinga alone wouldn't have made a credible Test attack. They really need two of him to have anything above average.

After Murali, SL's attack was always going to suffer. Malinga's absence just adds to that blow.

Well Malinga would have had Randiv & Herath, who would have definitely assisted him in SRI conditions. Overseas would have been the problem.

Well yeah, at home Herath is perhaps an even better bowler than Malinga, but in a way that's my point. As much as he was a very decent Test player, he didn't quite have the polish to carry an attack.

Malingas problem as a test bowler was he was class at unsettling batsmen but didn't get the wickets. against england in 2007 they hated playing him.

his bounce can be lethal, I remember that cricinfo column written by chopra described him as one of the scariest fast bowlers around because his bouncer was very difficult to spot coming, but bouncers aren't the best balls to take wickets with.

he needed to find another way of getting wickets or sri lanka needed a partner for him.

reason doesn't keep up with ipl.but, bcos of his bowling action
its too difficult for him to bowl like that for long hours

Malinga's retirement is a big blow for Srilanka. He was a high quality bowler and Srilankans would have looked Malinga to fill the big shoes to Chaminda Vaas.

Now, Malinga and Murali's replacements will be the biggest change for Srilanka Cricket.

^Exactly. It's a shame he didn't have the body/action to play more, but SL aren't missing anything, because they basically never had him!

Its a bit like Flintoff's retirement in a sense. Towards the end of his career he was more of a distraction as everyone was unsettled with him constantly looming over the team with his various comebacks. Possibly a good thing.

Off-topic, but have you ever seen the show 'Freddie Flintoff vs the World'. It's about how Freddie attempts to do random extreme sports.

Anyway, the episode I saw, he was supposed to participate in this Mexican Wrestling tournament. Practices for about a week, and manages to get injured (again!) the night before his match. :lol Funny, but you've got to feel for him.
