Melbourne - Sporting capital of the world 2010

(sticking up for Melbourne here) who has the formula 1, Australian open and the Biggest and by far greatest stadium in Australia? Also more fans would go to things in Melbourne than sydney.

Fine. Then we pwn in AFL, since Sydney didn't make the finals last year. We dominated the netball, had both Victorian teams in the last NBA finals, won two trophies in cricket and made another final.

Soccer - Sydney
NRL - Sydney
AFL - Melbourne
Cricket - Melbourne
Netball - Melbourne
Basketball - Melbourne

Sydney had the V8's not long ago IIRC. We have ANZ, SFS and SCG as well - all quality stadiums. Plus Melbourne only have 1 team in most competitions, NSW has many. 3 NSW teams in the A-League for example, and another team joining next season (Western Sydney)

Plus we got the best golfer in the world to come here for our biggest tournament ;)

Netball and Basketball aren't major sports in Australia.

Football - Sydney
NRL - Sydney
AFL - Melbourne (Sydney won it in 05, made the GF in 06 and are right up the top this season. Plus Brisbane won it for like 3 years straight in the early 00's didnt they?)
Cricket - Melbourne (NSW did win the FC not long ago)
Union - Not Melbourne. I have nfi who dominates that. NZ go ok in that. And the Saffas.

Ok, so you have more teams, you win that point. But that definitely means that we perform better then, seeing as we "only have 1 team in most competitions".

Then why's Australia the best netball team in the world? And we do alright in basketball, second best women's team and tenth best men's team.

Netball must get like 100 people to the games. Just because we do well it's not a major sport here.

I think this award's for mainly hosting events.

The discussion has sort of changed to who has the better sport teams following a Gazza comment tbh. Not as much about the award, just Sydney vs Melbourne in sports.

Sydney rules in Rugby, Melbourne rules is AFL, Cricket and Soccer are basically even, End debate.
