Although, for 6 years straight between 01-06 a non Melbourne team won the AFL. (Brisbane, Port Adelaide, Sydney and West Coast). So Melbourne havent completely dominated AFL in the 00's

I wouldn't even know who won Netball and Basketball last year, but I'll assume it was Melbourne. A majority of Australia couldnt care less. Also, if it's Australia vs Melbourne, Australia gets League and Union. It's not just 'rugby', it's two different sports. (@ Covvy) Sydney gets League but not Union, but it certainly doesnt go to Melbourne.

I'm going to stick up for Sydney here as I used to live there. Syd hosted the Olympics, has the best Australian FC team, has a glorious stadium, plenty of top swimmers from Sydney, pretty good soccer team too from what I've heard.

So Syd wins.
