We're sport's champion city again | Herald Sun
MELBOURNE has been named the world's Ultimate Sports City for the third time, despite some tough competition from 25 other international capitals.
Sydney, Singapore, Vancouver and even 2012 Olympic host London couldn't match the Victorian capital when it came to our sporting credentials.
Melbourne claimed the title for the third time at the SportAccord awards ceremony in Dubai overnight.
The accolade is likely to be a thorn in Sydney's side after the NSW Government announced recently it would try to lure the Australian Grand Prix across the border.
But Victorian Sports Minister James Merlino said the award cemented the city's status.
"We are the sporting capital of the world,'' Mr Merlino said.
"Victorians love their sport and this award once again confirms what Victorians have known for a long time.''
He said Melbourne's credentials included hosting the Australian Open Tennis, Formula One Grand Prix, the AFL season, Boxing Day Test, Spring Racing Carnival and Australian Masters Golf.
It is a hat-trick win for the city which has claimed the biannual trophy in 2006 and 2008.
Mr Merlino said the calendar of events in 2010 also included the Bledisloe Cup stoush and The Presidents Cup in 2011 - making Melbourne the only city outside the US to host the event twice.
In all, 25 cities were short-listed for the award and ranked according to criteria including the number of annual sports events, the quality of venues, transport and security.
Ultimate Sports Cities 2010 spokeswoman Rachael Church-Sanders said Melbourne had a strong track record.
"The city's excellent facilities, strong government support, exceptional legacy planning, not to mention fabulous weather make it a worthy winner once again,'' she said .

The third year in a row! No competition really, seeing as every year we host two of the biggest sporting events in the world and many others (have hosted the Olympics and Commonwealth games), have some of the best sporting facilities in the world (including the MCG, one of the world's seven sporting wonders), one of the best transport systems in the world (although currently undergoing stress from a big population) and the biggest sporting fans in the world!
Plus, we've got most of the best sporting teams in Australia.
