Sachin Tendulkar in training for India

Sachin Tendulkar will miss the next two matches against Chennai Super Kings and Kings XI Punjab, Robin Singh, the head coach of Mumbai Indians, has said. Tendulkar injured his groin during the Mumbai Indians training in Chennai ahead of their game against the Chennai Super Kings. In his place the vice-captain Zaheer Khan has been elevated to lead the side.

"He [Tendulkar] is going for a scan to see how bad it is. Once we assess him, only then we will know how long he will be out for. It's a bit serious and he won't play on Tuesday against Chennai and Friday against Punjab," Singh said. "We are hopeful it wont be as bad as it was during the first season, which kept him out for as long as eight matches."

Zaheer Khan has no captaincy experience and leading players of international quality in a lucrative tournament will be a huge task for India's bet left-arm fast bowler. Mumbai have all but qualified for the semi-finals winning six of the eight matches.

"Sachin Tendulkar injury will be a huge blow for the Mumbai Indians," Modi told the TV channel CNN-IBN. "He has been great form for both India and Mumbai Indians this season and it would be very difficult for the Mumbai Indians to cope without him. He is a leader on the field and now there will be huge responsibility on shoulders of Zaheer Khan."

Shikhar Dhawan's half-century goes in vain

Chennai Super Kings kept their hopes of a semi-final berth alive with a 7-run win over Mumbai Indians in a dramatic encounter at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. The hosts got off to a solid start thanks to Matthew Hayden (58 off 40 balls) and Partiv Patel (13 off 15), to reach 3 for 94 in 12 overs. The game exploded from the next over as MS Dhoni and Michael Hussey went all guns blazing to smash the Mumbai Indians bowlers but failed to do so.

Zaheer Khan leading the Mumbai Indians instead of the injured Sachin Tendulkar, lead from the front and bowled brilliantly, as he ended up conceding just 18 runs from his 4 overs picking up the wicket of Partiv Patel. Malinga, Bravo, Harbhajan Singh, Jayasuriya and Kulkarni all contributed well in Mumbai's bowling to restrict the Chennai Super Kings for 147 in 20 overs. Dhawal Kulkarni ended up picking two important wickets of MS Dhoni and Michael Hussey in his 2 overs which went for 16 runs, while Bravo and Malinga picked up one wicket each.

Shikhar Dhawan (70 off 42 balls) and Sanath Jayasuriya (26 off 13 balls) blasted the Mumbai Indians off to a flyer hammering Albie Morkel and Balaji to all parts of the park. But a controversial decision from the umpire to give Jayasuriya leg before disrupted their momentum. Shikhar Dhawan tried to get back the momentum but some brilliant bowling by spinners Muralitharan and Ashwin made it more difficult for the Mumbai Indians.

Dhawan and Aditya Tare added 62 runs off 55 balls for the second wicket, but Muttiah Muralitharan picked up two wickets in two overs which completely swung the match in Chennai Super Kings' favour. First Aditya Tare(16 off 31 balls) and then dangerous looking Shikhar Dhawan. Some discipline and accurate bowling from the Chennai Super Kings made runs difficult to come for Mumbai Indians. Rahane was caught by Hayden at slips of Ashwin for 7 off 15 balls and later Morkel got rid of Dwayne Bravo for 10 off 9 balls in the penultimate over of the match.

Mumbai Indians needed 9 runs off the last over, with 5 wickets in hand, and Abhishek Nayar and Kieron Pollard in the middle. The task looked easy for the Mumbai Indians with these two big hitters in the middle but MS Dhoni surprised the supporters and even to some extend the two batsmen in the middle, when he took the gamble and gave the ball to Suresh Raina. But the gamble was a masterstroke and it paid of as Suresh Raina turned the hero, as he bowled a brilliant last over in which he conceded just 2 runs to restrict the Mumbai Indians for 140 in their 20 overs. This win meant that the Chennai Super Kings kept their semi-final hopes alive.
