Houston Rockets
PF - Thomas Robinson
SF - Chandler Parsons
C - Omer Asik
PG - Jeremy Lin
SG - James Harden

1st quarter

Thomas Robinson kicked things off attacking the rim, twice drawing fouls. 3 points came from the subsequent free throws. Denver, with a poor start to their season, responded by exploding out a 13-1 run. Kenneth Faried was especially impressive, the "Manimal" forcing his way to the rim. Houston were not to be discouraged as they replied with a 12-4 run of their own, cutting the deficit to one. There wasn't any one Houston player to stand out but instead it was a series of small contributions from the players that had Houston up by one at the end of the first.

End of 1st quarter
DEN 24-25 HOU
Kenneth Faried 6 pts, 2 reb
Thomas Robinson 3 pts, 2 reb

2nd quarter

Neither team could lay any claim to any real ascendancy in the second quarter. Chandler Parsons and Patrick Beverley were the main scorers for Houston while Denver collect theirs through Ty Lawson and forward Corey Brewer. The back and forth scoring continued right up to when there was just over two and a half minutes left in the quarter. A small 7-2 burst from Denver allowed them to lead at the end of the first half after what was a fairly even quarter.

End of the 2nd quarter
DEN 52-50 HOU
Kenneth Faried 10 pts, 4 reb
Chandler Parsons 9 pts, 3 reb

3rd quarter

It was more the same business in the third quarter. Andre Iguodala put away his first three of the night. The next 9 points scored by either side came from the free throw line, allowing Houston to slowly close the gap. An Omer Asik layup tied the scores (59-59) and soon after, Parsons struck from distance to give Houston a slender 64-63 lead.

All the hard work was undone in the last three minutes of the period. Leading 73-69, Denver scored the next 11 points. Kenneth Faried drove through the defence for 2 while Iguodala banked in his second 3-pointer. Robinson then fouled Iguodala trying to go for another 3, who then took the full set of three free throws. With the clock winding down, Lawson put away a tough shot and one, Parsons fouling. Denver had turned around 4-point deficit to a 7-point lead.

End of the 3rd quarter
DEN 80-73 HOU
Kenneth Faried 13 pts, 5 reb, 1 stl
Chandler Parsons 12 pts, 6 reb, 2 stl

4th quarter

Houston fell away badly in the final stretch. Every time they scored, it seemed as though Denver would score twice. Jeremy Lin and James Harden were not themselves in this match. Lin, as has been the custom, had his best quarter in the fourth. Parsons continued his steady progress. Denver, through Iguodala and Faried, turned the game into a blowout. Iguodala scored 11 of his 25 points in the fourth, including three of his five 3-pointers in the game. Soon the lead passed double digits. 3-pointers from Lin and Patrick Beverley only served to bring the lead below 20. Houston's 3-game winning run to the season was over.

Final
DEN 118-99 HOU

A disappointing blowout loss to the Nuggets was a rude awakening for Houston. James Harden will be mortified by his performance, with 4 from 22 field goals and an embarrassing 0 from 11 from outside the paint. Jeremy Lin was quiet and didn't rally the attack as he would have liked. Chandler Parsons was one of the few positives to take away from the game along with Omer Asik's continued dominance of the rebounding stats.

Kinda funny how Harden makes only 4 of his 22 shots (0 of 11 behind the arc) and still ends up with 15 points. Dem free throws.

The Grizzlies defence was always going to be a tough obstacle to overcome for Houston. They came agonisingly close only to fall one point short.

Mike Conley was the Grizzlies main man, starting the game off with a 3-pointer. He finished the game with 15 assists and 7 steals, protecting the ball well and showing great court vision. Marc Gasol snapped up 15 rebounds to go with 15 points. His 6 straight points at the start of the third quarter was a decisive passage of play, giving Memphis real momentum. Zach Randolph was ever present on both ends of the court and back-up power forward Darrell Arthur had a 100% shooting performance, contributing 18 points in just 12 minutes of play.

Houston were always within striking distance of the Grizzlies but they couldn't finish the job. Jeremy Lin was the best performing Rocket along with James Harden. Thomas Robinson and Chandler Parsons rebounded well with Lin and Harden distributing the ball effectively. Of concern will the 67.9% free throw percentage. Nine free throws were missed and considering the final score, those free throws could have been the difference for Houston.

After two straight losses, Houston made a few changes to their rotation. Royce White was dropped out and Donatas Motiejunas was brought in. Aaron Brooks and Carlos Delfino were both given more time off the bench.

Motiejunas made the most of his call up with a solid outing, scoring 12 points in just 8 minutes of play. Thomas Robinson and James Harden were the top scorers for the Rockets, both with 22 points. Chandler Parsons and Jeremy Lin both had 18 points, with Lin securing a double-double thanks to his 10 assists. Brooks is likely to find another increase in his role after a good shooting performance.

Houston were in total control until the third quarter, where they conceded 39 points to Detroit. By then the damage had already been done in the first half but a lapse like that will be of concern to the Houston coaching staff.

Detroit on the other hand slumped to their fifth loss of the season. Brandon Knight and Greg Monroe led the Pistons but were let down by their forwards Jason Maxiell and Kyle Singler who combined for a mere 11 points. The third quarter showed that they had fight in them but they'll need it to be more consistent and sustained if they are to have any chance of improving their dire start to the season.
