The Strikers - Thunderbolts clash was a topsy turvy affair, in which the upper hand swayed repeatedly throughout the match.
Central made the better start as Gayle and Astle build a strong foundation, but all their work was undone by some great spin bowling from Shahid Afridi and Muttiah Muralitharan.
Wellington were facing a "par" score in front of them, and made a terrible start losing their top three for just 9 run's between them.
Icon player Ross Taylor and skipper MS Dhoni lead a fightback, but another collapse was triggered as they lost four more quick wickets.
The burden was but onto bowling all-rounder's Ian Butler and Tim Southee, and some incredible hitting by them both saw the Thunderbolts escape with seven deliveries remaining.
New Zealand batting all-rounder Corey Anderson was again impressive with the ball, with his four over's only costing 24 runs.
