Excellent attacking cricket by England. Even Lees appeared to be ultra positive in the 2nd Innings with his flurry of boundaries in the first five-seven overs. A great Test match to watch as a neutral.
On NZ's part, I cannot understand their reluctance to go in with Wagner. Perhaps he would have made a difference in this match. Hopefully, he does so for the 3rd Test.
Coming to Root, that fellow is on an another level. Don't think we can consider the fab four any longer. The gaps increased way too much now. The trio of VK, KW, and SS would need something special to match that.

This is more about age factor I feel. Kane Williamson, Virat Kohli & Steve Smith all peaked at the age of 29-31. Also Joe Root is playing Tests alone since a long time and doesn't play in T20 leagues around the world.
I am not saying Root isn't doing anything special but I don't think the other 3 did worse than him.

Yeah recency bias is huge here. Rooooooooot is astonishing, but there was also the period when Smith didn't get out for years, or when Kohli converted almost every start to a hundred. Or when Williamson... idk, also scored runs

Yeah, before last year Root was very consistent but didn't convert.
His last 20 tests as captain yielded 8 centuries/4 fifties. His previous 44 matches he only scored 6 centuries and 22 half centuries.

One possible spinner who has been standing out in county cricket is Liam Patterson-White. Great control, bags of wickets, bats a bit. Might look into going to a day's Championship cricket to have a look

His stats look pretty average but I suppose he is more decent than that.
On an off-note, I can only imagine the kind of confusion Captains had to face in identifying the difference between Craig & Jamie as far as the physical appearance goes. Are they twins?

He's kind of a Steve Harmison type bowler. On his off-days he's awful, but on his good days he's occasionally capable of hitting mid-90s mph.
He's also been really badly coached until the last six months or so, where he's worked really closely with Azhar Mahmood to make his run-up and action more repeatable. At the same time he's also really improved his batting: averages about 50 in the Championship this season, and is striking at 175 in his T20 career. A very clean hitter of a cricket ball, and last year when his bowling was absolutely not working, he still made the Surrey T20 side as a batter. There'll be an element of that involved in his selection

Not to diminish the bowling but it feels like England are just doing well and New Zealand's top order has been crap this series.
