New Zealand's Tour Of India Aug-Sep 2012

Very, he has 2 spots to fill in and has 4 options. Pujara vs Rahane for Dravid's spot and Badrinath vs Raina for Laxman's spot, I think.

Raina shouldn't be an option at all, please. I'd love to see both Rahane and Pujara playing.

That's possible as well, I just pit up the 2 top-order batsmen and the 2 middle-order batsmen against each other.

Pujara should be a direct selection unless MSD has other plans to groom someone like a Raina.

Pujara and Rahane are the young guys that I would groom in tests. But its not bad to have one early 30's guy in the team. Mike Hussey started in the Aussie team when he was 30+ and yet he has played for Australia for long now. If Badri comes in and clicks, he can play for 6 years (he is 31 now). Same with Kaif. If he can come in and click, what's wrong in playing them for 5-6 years? Thats a long enough time.

I initially thought the selectors completely gave up on Badri. Or else Badri would always be the first choice ahead of Kaif, Raina, Rohit Sharma. We have a few batsmen who can play tests. We just need some sane selectors to pick them properly. This would be a good XI:

Sehwag
Gambhir
Pujara
Tendulkar
Kohli
Badrinath
Dhoni
Ashwin
Zaheer
Ojha
Yadav/Ishant

Occasionally if you want Rahane in, you can have Rahane open the innings and have Sehwag bat in the middle (for overseas tours where Sehwag could be a walking wicket at the top)

Here Manjrekar talks about sending Sehwag down the order, but where would you actually fit him in? He can't bat at 3, Sachin currently bats at 4, maybe 5 will be the spot for him with Kohli at 6 and Dhoni to follow at 7?

----------

Did some research, he actually made his debut at #6, I know this happens to a lot of batsmen who're trying to get into the side, but in this case we could send him back where he started. The only problem I see with this switch is that the #6 position deals with a lot of batting with the tail and Sehwag being who he is with his careless attitude, I don't see him fitting too well down there.

Rahane
Gambhir
Pujara
Tendulkar

That's the only way I see it working with the current set up.

Pujara and Badrinath didn't turn up for India's first practice session after reaching the venue of 1st Test. Is it a sign that they will sit out and India will be fielding Rahane, Kohli and Raina in the first test? :spy

If Sehwag is in the team, he should be either opening the innings or batting at 5 where he has some batting left on the other end.

Harsha's article highlights the true picture. We, in India, do have a knack of picking up a few players from here and there and then putting them into the main side.

Sanjay's article- well ,I do read them but tbh, he is a hypocrite. Unlike Bhogle, he ends up defending a lot of people and hurls abuses at those whom he does not like. For a person like him- who never won a Test/ ODI for India, to comment upon others is not right.

.

Another thing is -you do not want 2 careless people out there in the form of MSD and Viru. If this back-fires, it back fires badly. I feel Sehwag is more suited to the top of the order, till at least Tendulkar retires.

I see. Just wondering, is Mishra and Murali Karthik seen a spin bowling options for test cricket in the future?

I know Mishra got smoked in England last year, but he is interesting leggie, plus after all these years i've always felt Karthik never got enough chances for India.

I guess it al depends on how long more Tendulkar lasts i guess.

Thats the problem that Kris Srikanth's selection panel has left to the next one. No succession planning. Yes, they chose a squad that took the World Cup and the No.1 spot, but they made the mistake of not grooming people. 'A' tours -have a look at the squad and you will see the problem. Till a few months ago, we had Wriddhiman Saha doing the rounds as a reserve keeper. He was also the vice-captain of the squad for the Windies. Now, for the NZ A tour, he is not even in there. Instead we have Naman Ojha.

Mishra is, he has age on his side and spinners seem to only get better as they age, but Murali Karthik, not so much and I just looked up his age, 35, yeah, don't think we'll be seeing him in the whites or the blue ever.

Yeah, that's the only real way I see it working and I think he's perfect for that spot, he'll get to avoid the 1st new ball and he'll still have the opportunity to play those big long innings that he just loves.

I would start Pujara at #6, use Kohli at #3 and Sehwag to #5. That way you can follow Sehwag with a more responsible player. When Tendulkar retires, then Kohli would drop to #4 and Pujara up to #3.

Anyway, Sehwag will be fine as opener on home soil but for overseas Tests he should be moving down to shield himself.
