Pre-Match Press Conference
Do you think you have enough quality in your side to make Europe this season?
In the short time that I've been here, working with the lads, I can honestly say that we have the quality to qualify for Europe. Be it the Champions' League or the Uefa Cup, I believe we can get in within the top teams amongst England and Europe. Once the transfer market comes back around I shall be looking at strengthening the squad but it's clear to me that the side I have in front of me now has what it takes to produce the right results.

"If my team performs to it's potential, this is a huge possibility"
What are your realistic aims come the end of the season?
Realistically, I believe a top 8 finish is the minimum. A side of Newcastle's size and ability must be able to compete against the best this country has to offer. If we perform better than my initial hopes are then we can maybe attract players from bigger clubs than ourselves, although as I've said already, the lads I have at my disposal already have the potential. I have to get it out of them.
Are you going to focus on making sure your strikers are on top form, seeing as this has been a problem area in past seasons?
We have some top quality strikers at this club, those which we have paid big money for. I have every faith in their ability. Michael (Owen) scored today which I'm sure will be a huge boost to his confidence, keeping Michael fit is a big part of our season. Our newest forward, Mark Viduka, also scored today and I expect him to perform throughout the season. We all know what Oba (Martins) can do when he hits form. I also have Shola (Ameobi) and Alan (Smith) who could be playing important roles in my strikeforce. I will not play favourites towards anyone on my side. If they want to play, they have to show they're capable.
Also do you think Owen can find the sort of form he is renowned with England this season?
As I mentioned above, Michael is a huge part of my team. I will be working very close with Michael this season to make sure he is in good fitness throughout the entire campaign. If he is not at 100%, I will be undergoing thorough talks with Michael and my back-room staff whether a rest is the best option. I'm sure with the right attitude from both parties, I can bring Michael the form he has with England, back to Newcastle.

"I hope myself and Owen can work well together this season"
Thanks for your time.
