Norwich City - a new start

Nah, no pressure in the Championship, just make sure you get off to a good start else you'll be playing catchup for the rest of the season.

Good luck and keep it up. :)

It is a long season and so much can change - consistency is key!

COVENTRY CITY v NORWICH CITY

The first competitive game of the season for my Norwich City team was in the Midlands, against Coventry City. I would be happy with a point to kick off the Coca Cola Championship.

There were 2 changes to the side that drew with King's Lynn in the last friendly. Jon Otsemobor came in for the injured Andrew Cave-Brown, although he probably would have played anyway, and I went for the experienced Adam Drury instead of the young Ryan Bertrand. This was the line up:

----------------------Marshall----------------------------
Otsemobor---Doherty--------Shackell---------Drury
Croft---------Russell-------Fotheringham (c)--Murphy--
------------------Cotterill----Evans---------------------

Substitutes: Gilks, Parkin, Bertrand, Dublin, Cureton

There was a strong wind across The Ricoh Arena, but it was very hot. Their defender Arjan de Zeeuw had to be substituted because he was injured after just 4 minutes, a bad start to the season for him. Both sides had one chance each in the early stages, Ched Evans firing wide and their best player, Michael Mifsud, hitting the post.

It was a very even game, it was end to end in places, and I was pleased it was still 0-0 at half time. I gave the players some encouragement, I didn't make any changes as I felt they were playing well.

I had the feeling this was going to be a game in which one of the sides would nick a goal and that would be the difference. We gave ourselves the best chance of winning by scoring through Dave Cotterill on his league debut for us. The ball ran free and Cotterill used his skill to get past the defender and slot the ball home.

Unfortunately, we were unable to keep a hold of the lead. A brilliant move from Coventry City ended in Leon Best scoring the equaliser. Jason Shackell's involvement in the failed attempt to defend it caused him to pick up an injury, forcing him to come off and me to play Dion Dublin in the centre of defence in his place.

I thought it had all gone wrong when Mifsud smashed the ball into the net, but the referee had blown his whistle already for offside. The Sky Blues were furious, they were adamant the Maltese striker was onside. I was delighted the referees had ruled in our favour!

After getting a let off like that, we shouldn't have let Gary Borrowdale put them in front in the 90th minute. We tried hard, but it was too late, Coventry City had stolen the points. We were in the lead, we were competitive, we were unlucky. We needed to do better in the rest of the month after this poor start.

Coventry City 2-1 Norwich City
Cotterill 53

SHACKELL BREAKS NOSE

Norwich City defender Jason Shackell will be unavailable to play for the team for between one and two weeks after breaking his nose in the Coca Cola Championship match against Coventry City at The Ricoh Arena.

Town 3-3 Stoke, pretty good

Unlucky with the loss, hope it doesn't become a regular thing.

Great story bad loss there mate KUTGW

I have historically not done very well in the league with Norwich in the past. I hope this season is different.

CANARIES ANNOUNCE GOOD SEASON TICKET SALES

Norwich City have announced that they have sold 17,000 season tickets for this season. This good figure is believed to be due to a high level of interest in the new manager Lee Payne.

LINCOLN CITY v NORWICH CITY

The first round match of the Carling Cup for my Norwich City team was against Lincoln City of the Coca Cola League Two at Sincil Bank. I was expecting a comfortable win to kick off a good cup run.

There were only 2 changes to the side that lost the opening Coca Cola Championship game to Coventry City. Alex Pearce came in for Jason Shackell in the defence, who was out with a broken nose, and Jon Parkin was given his debut for the club, with Ched Evans dropping to the bench. This was the line up:

----------------------Marshall----------------------------
Otsemobor---Doherty--------Pearce---------Drury
Croft---------Russell-------Fotheringham (c)--Murphy--
------------------Cotterill----Parkin---------------------

Substitutes: Gilks, Evans, Bertrand, Dublin, Cureton

It was a very hot evening, with a slight breeze, the time of the season that an evening game would start in broad daylight. We had the best of the early stages, but their striker Jamie Forrester forced a brilliant save from David Marshall in the 18th minute.

It was deep into the first half stoppage time when Lee Croft put us in front after a very good throw in from Adam Drury left him with plenty of time to shoot. It gave us a big advantage to go into half time 1-0 up. I told the players not to get careless and I brought on Dion Dublin in place of Dave Cotterill who wasn't having a very good game.

We were dominant, and Jon Parkin doubled our lead after a fantastic pass from Darel Russell. Lincoln City responded well though, they got one back just 2 minutes later after some good work from Mark Stallard. We had to be careful not to let our lead go now.

With both sides having some great chances, I brought on Jamie Cureton in place of Jon Parkin to sharpen up our attack. We managed to hold on, it wasn't the performance I was hoping for, but a win is a win, we were through to the next round. The club had earned £20,000 by getting to the second round so the board of directors would have been happy too.

Canaries sent to Coventry! Haha nice news story! And an easy win for the Super Sky Blues! But Best scoring I can understand, but Gary Borrowdale??? Can't get a game to save his life nowadays in a Cov shirt with Danny Fox performing brilliantly. Anyway, you know who I was supporting :p But Swindon Town 6-5 Coventry????? Some very strange results in there! But back to winning ways, expectedly against Lincoln so hopefully you can build on that. KUTGW!

CANARIES EARN INTERNATIONAL CALL UPS

Two members of the Norwich City squad have been called up to play for their countries in international friendlies. Midfielder Matty Pattison and goalkeeper David Marshall could face off against each other as South Africa take on Scotland in Glasgow on 22nd August 2007.

CANARIES TO GO THE HAWTHORNS

Norwich City have been drawn against their Coca Cola Championship rivals West Bromwich Albion in the second round of the Carling Cup. Albion are widely expected to win promotion to the Barclays Premier League this season and they were 5-1 winners against Notts County in the first round.

NORWICH CITY v HULL CITY

My first game at Carrow Road as manager of Norwich City was against Hull City and it was important because we needed to get off the mark in the Coca Cola Championship. I was hoping for a win, but nothing is certain in this league.

There were 3 changes to the side that beat Lincoln City in the Carling Cup. Ryan Bertrand got a chance at left back in place of Adam Drury, Kieran Gibbs played on the left of midfield instead of Daryl Murphy, and Ched Evans replaced Jon Parkin up front. This was the line up:

----------------------Marshall----------------------------
Otsemobor---Doherty--------Pearce---------Bertrand
Croft---------Russell-------Fotheringham (c)--Gibbs--
------------------Cotterill----Evans---------------------

Substitutes: Gilks, Murphy, Drury, Dublin, Cureton

It was the perfect conditions for football, pleasent weather that was not too hot and not too cold, it should have inspired good football. We started really well, we were too quick for Hull City, they had to resort to giving away free kicks to stop us going forward. They had commited 13 fouls within half an hour!

Darel Russell's long ball over the top in the 27th minute allowed Ched Evans to get into the penalty area and put us into the lead. We now had to keep it and improve on it. Alas, we couldn't. A move that started with a free kick ended in
Fraizer Campbell bundling the ball into the net. Once again we had relinquished a lead.

At half time, instead of getting angry with the players, I encouraged them to go out and get the lead back. I brought on the experienced Dion Dublin for Dave Cotterill, hoping for some authority. We started the second half nothing like I had hoped. Campbell scored his second, in off the upright, to finish off a good move for the away side. We could not afford to lose this game!

I made a change to the formation, trying to get more men forward without leaving us too exposed at the back. The game plodded on to the 90th minute, however, with very little happening. David Livermore received 2 yellow cards within the space of a minute, to give us a one man advantage, but I felt it was too late for us to do anything. I was right, as the referee blew the final whistle, I was as disappointed as the people in the stands.

We had lost our first two league games of the season, and were in desperate need of some luck.

CANARY EARNS PLACE IN THE TEAM OF THE WEEK

Norwich City midfielder Darel Russell was selected for the Coca Cola Championship's 'team of the week'. He set up the goal in the Canaries' 1-2 defeat to Hull City at Carrow Road.

CAVE-BROWN RECOVERS FROM INJURY

Young Norwich City defender Andrew Cave-Brown has resumed full training with the squad after spending three weeks out with a knee injury. He will now be hoping to earn a place in the club's faltering defence.

Good to see CAVE-BROWN came back.
Darel Russell has some great time.

Unlucky there, but Hull are flying in real life, and I always lose to Hull in my story! And I just played Southampton in my story too and lost 2-0 :( so 2-1 is an improvement :p KUTGW
