Vaughan awarded freedom of Sheffield

Last week it was Andrew Flintoff in Preston, this week, it's the turn of Michael Vaughan. He is to be honoured with the freedom of the city of Sheffield, after becoming the first England captain for 20 years to regain the Ashes.

Vaughan will become only the sixth honorary freeman of the South Yorkshire city, once famous for its steel industry. He joins an illustrious list that includes Winston Churchill and Nelson Mandela.

The city's Lord Mayor, Roger Davison, told AFP: "It's great for Sheffield that Michael has led England to this success in such a spectacular manner. His leadership has made everyone in the city immensely proud, and he fully deserves the honour of freedom of the city."
Now COME ON ENGLAND! Yes Vaughan did good by winning the Ashes, but comparing him to Churchill and Mandela??? COME ON!!!

Nobody is comparing him to Chuchill and Mandela. He's just on a list with them.

That's like saying people are comparing me to Clive Lloyd because we're both on a list of people born on the 31st of August.

Should he be given that award? No. Another example of success starved England clutching at whatever they can get. Ie England Rugby World Cup side all recieving OBEs and Tim Henman getting one for reasons only jebus knows.

Why not? He's from Sheffield, he's had success, so why shouldn't he recieve an honour from his home city?

In any case, these sort of honours don't really mean anything. It's just a publicity stunt from the Sheffield city council.

You appear to care more about whatever awards English sports people are given than any of us in England do. Perhaps we'd better keep dishing them out to give you something to talk about. :D We'll ignore who's been given what by Blair or any other politician, as we always do.

The only sports awards that matter are the ones voted for by the public just before Christmas. Given the spirit in which the recent series was played I suspect Vaughan and co. won't mind if the BBC bring an Aussie along to present the team award this time, unlike Mr Campese's appearance a couple of years ago.
