Having seen nothing about this on BBC Sport website or Cricinfo I was a bit suprised to read in the Scottish Times today that Vaughan is to be the new captain.
The article is here:

England hand mantle to Vaughan

DUNCAN FLETCHER will this weekend give his blessing to the appointment of Michael Vaughan as England?s one-day captain, although Vaughan may not be unveiled as the leader until next week because of playing commitments and contractual negotiations, writes Simon Wilde.
His appointment must also await the approval of the International Teams Management Group, chaired by Dennis Amiss, and David Morgan, the chairman of the England and Wales Cricket Board, but there is no chance of either applying a veto.

The decision paves the way for Vaughan, who has declared a keen interest in taking on one of the most onerous jobs in English public life, to succeed Nasser Hussain as Test captain some time next year. He would then become the first Yorkshire cricketer formally appointed to the post since Brian Close in 1966, eight years before Vaughan was born.

Fletcher has been the most reluctant party in these deliberations with his fellow selectors, David Graveney and Geoff Miller ? a reflection perhaps of the emotional investment he had put into Marcus Trescothick becoming Hussain?s eventual heir.

During his three years in the side, Trescothick has stood in for Hussain in a number of matches on tour and led England in a one-day international in Bulawayo two years ago, when Hussain was injured. Vaughan?s imperious rise to the top of the world rankings of Test batsmen, allied with Trescothick?s own technical problems has led to a decisive shift in power.

Vaughan has been the obvious choice since Hussain announced he was standing down from one-day cricket following England?s World Cup exit seven weeks ago, but the selectors have often got it wrong before when it comes to picking leaders, so Vaughan?s impending promotion should be greeted with relief. He is eloquent, calm and well balanced and can be expected to treat the job with the right mix of humour and common sense.

There was a risk that, under pressure, Trescothick might have found the glare of publicity aggravating; that is less likely to be the case with Vaughan.

Vaughan?s immediate problem is that he has relatively little experience of captaincy or one-day international cricket ? injuries have limited him to only 26 one-day games for England since he first broke into the side four years ago ? although the hallmark of his remarkable batting development is his speed of learning.

His first leadership assignment will be the three-match NatWest Challenge against Pakistan in June, starting in Manchester, the city of his birth, followed by the triangular NatWest Series against South Africa and Zimbabwe.

Has he ever captianed the English side ? It will be interesting to see him although I was quite sure that he would be the next captian.

He's never captained the full England side, but I think he captained the A side and the U19 side in the past. It's strange though as Trescothick usually takes over when Hussain is injured, but I suppose he needs to concentrate on his batting now.

It's going to be interesting because Vaughan hasn't really proved himself as a top ODI player yet. His average is 23.50 with a highest score of 63. In fact looking at his stats you might think he was a bowler! (30.25 4-22)
Good luck to him anyway.

This appointment of Vaughan as England's ODI captain has been officially confirmed today by the ECB. His first assignment will be a one day series against Pakistan, starting on the 17th of June.
