The squad drove for just under an hour before they cought sight of The Villa down in the valley below them. Covvy pulled the truck over into a clearing at the side of the road and they all dismounted. It would be much safer to travel the last mile or so to The Villa on foot.
When they were in a good position above The Villa they stopped to take a sitrep, things didn't look good. There were at least 20 tangos out in the open with a lot more likely to be in the buildings around the compound. There were 3 manned anti-aircraft guns in the central courtyard and even more worryingly; a T-72 battle tank parked near the north entrance. It didn't look to be manned but securing it would have to be a top priority.
The first problem facing them however was actually infiltrating the compound itself. The north entrance had more cover on its approach but was covered by a static machine gun nest, despite this it looked a much better bet than the west entrance which was fronted by the main road. Hedger took up position on the hillside, using the cover of a rock he made sure the tango manning the machine gun was within his sights.
At the sound of Hedger's gunshot the machinegunner fell back, dead before his body hit the ground. The men in the bunker just across from the MG nest barely had time to register the sound of the shot before 2 grenades flew in through the window and landed at their feet. In the enclosed space they had no chance.
With Hedger covering them the rest of the squad moved down the hill and through the entrance into the compound. Here they split up with Highlander, Trev and Mark moving towards the T-72 and the rest heading for the door into the main building complex. The tangos in the courtyard had been alerted by the explosions and a fierce firefight began as they engaged the squad.
The squad moved quickly down the corridor of the ground floor clearing the rooms one by one. Some Tangos burst out a door further down the hall and in their panic and confusion were unable to return fire before they were gunned down. Most of the rooms on the first floor were deserted and any tangos they did find were swiftly dealt with, there was no sign of Dr Volgin.
As they moved up to clear the first floor the Captain noticed a number of tangos emerging from a barracks and heading towards the main building.
"Yudi, Covvy; find a position to hold off those tangos while we clear the rest of the building!"
The two soldiers ran to the end of the first floor hallway and kicked down the door, they found themselves on the roof of the ground floor and had a good view down onto the courtyard below. From here they engaged the tangos and soon had them pinned down and unable to gain entry to the building.
Back inside Riz kicked down the final door of the first floor. It was empty apart from a figure sprawled on the floor next to an upturned chair, a figure in a white labcoat. It was Dr Volgin.
There was no need to check his vital signs, the bullet hole between his eyes told them all they needed to know. The Captain let out a stream of curses before Riz cut him off;
"Captain, I think you should look at this." He was standing by the window which overlooked the back of the compound, there was parked a large black SUV with a number of nervous looking guards. Getting into it was a man in a General's uniform, Gonzalez.
They didn't have time to say anything else before the sound of massive gunfire could be heard coming from outside. The rebels were firing the anti-aircraft guns. The Captain's first terrible thought was that they were firing at the main building hoping to kill the squad members who were inside. It was odd but a couple of minutes later he would be hoping this actually was the case.
"Overlord to Omega, come in. We have intercepted a transmission from the Lingor Air Force, they've received word that General Gonzalez is present at The Villa and have scrambled a bomber to destroy the compound. ETA is under 5 minutes. Suggest you get out of there, over.
The Captain was already moving as he shouted into his comms unit;
"All units, fast extraction! We're taking the cars out front! Move move move!"
As they were running down the stairs Yudi rejoined them by himself;
"Covvy's gone!" was all he had time to say.
The courtyard outside was in chaos. The rebel soldiers almost completely ignored them as they ran about half-dressed and half asleep, any orders from their commanding officers went completely unheard over the deafening blasts of the anti-aircraft guns which fired flak into the night sky. As Omega squad regrouped by the two off-road cars the Captain noticed the General's black SUV turning the corner out of the front entrance of the compound, now accompanied by an armed jeep.
Mark and Highlander approached supporting Trev, who it appeared had been hit in the leg in the battle outside by the tank. The Captain yelled at them to hurry up as they dumped him unceremoniously into the back of one of the cars and then climbed aboard themselves. With one last look to make sure everyone had mounted up, he got into the drivers seat, yelling;
"Let's get the f** out of here!" Gunning the engine he sped towards the exit, the other car close behind.
Miles above them the pilot of the LAF MiG bomber received his final authorisation to release the 2000 lb bomb which hung underneath his aircraft. At the push of a button it detached and plunged down through the blackness of the night...
Unfortunately that's just how it is because Arma 2 is a very realistic FPS, if I let everyone go around being heroes the whole squad would be dead by now. Instead I try and use tactics and teamwork to keep people alive and it's just down to that little bit of luck if you get shot or not.
Sorry we had to bolt and leave your body behind to get incinerated by the bomb though
Although who knows yet if the rest of us even made it out before the bomb hit...
The two off-road cars containing the squad were jolted by the shockwave as the Villa was demolished by the huge force of the
2000lb bomb. They left the huge cloud of smoke and dust behind them as they accelerated down the winding roads after General Gonzalez and his small
convoy. As they drew closer there was a flash of light from the rear vehicle as the soldier manning the rear mounted machine gun opened fire on the
squad, the burst raked the lead car piercing the hood and windscreen but no one inside was injured. The Captain swore violently and took evasive action
as the gunner fired again, the car skidded fiercely and nearly went off the road but they managed to avoid the hail of bullets.
Yudi and Riz had cut open the tarp covering the back of the vehicle and were now returning fire, struggling to aim accurately as the car navigated the
twists and turns of the road at high speeds. It was now apparent they were heading uphill, deeper into the mountains.
The second vehicle had slowed down, unable to aid in the fight and to allow Mark and H to treat Trev's leg wound in the back. Athought it was bleeding
quite badly it did not look as if the bullet had severed an artery and had in fact gone straight through.
Back in the lead car they were on a patch of straight road and was now much easier for the soldiers firing from the roof to get a clean shot. Yudi took
aim with the underslung grenade launcher on his rifle and took the shot. The grenade scored a direct hit on the back of the jeep, instantly killing
the driver and gunner and causing the car to lurch to the left off the road. It did not travel far as it smashed heavily into a rock and sat there
smoldering.
During the battle Gonzalez's SUV had managed to build a significant lead on the snaking mountain roads. It was heading for an old mountain top airfield which
had originally been used by drug smugglers but was now under the control of rebel troops. The soldiers stood guarding a small commercial aeroplane onto which
they had already loaded the cannisters of Rizene gas and was now awaiting the General to take him off the island.
In the distance they could hear the sound of gunning engines approaching and the General's black SUV came pelting onto the airfield and up the runway towards
the waiting plane. Just as it approached the first light of dawn was beginning to appear in the eastern sky.
The Captain had no chance of stopping when the large shape of the truck appeared in front of him. His foot had been to the floor as he attempted to
catch up to Gonzalez and just as he crested a steep hill the truck which had been parked blocking the entrance to the airfield came into view. Slamming
on the breaks did nothing as all four wheels were off the ground at the time and the men in the car could only brace themselves as the slammed into the side of the vehicle
with a crunch. It was only a few seconds later when they were jolted heavily again as Hedger in the second vehicle suffered the same fate as the Captain and
plowed into the back of the lead car.
The squad staggered out of their vehicles nursing bruises from the crash, there was no time to waste however and they quickly moved into the airfield.
Almost immediately they came under fire from they APC which stood on the other side of the runway, it's roof mounted cannon quickly sending them running
for cover behind the small building near the entrance. From here they were also engaged by the rebel troops at the west end of the runway where General Gonzalez
was currently boarding his aircraft.
Back at the other end of the runway Riz had moved round the back of the building to get a clean shot at the APC which kept them pinned down. while
the rest of the squad drew the fire of the tangos, he loaded a missile into his anti-tank launcher and took aim. The missle scored a direct hit, piercing
the front armour of the APC and completely disabling it in a cloud of acrid black smoke
The battle on the runway intensified as the squad attempted to get closer to the Gonzalez's plane which was firing up it's engines for takeoff. But his
fanatical troops were defending fiercly from behind the black armored SUV and Omega squad were finding it hard to make any ground whatsoever. Just as they
were beginning to gain the upper hand in the fight the plane began to set off, moving down the runway towards where they were entrenched. As it drew
level with them a few members of the squad fired bursts at the cockpit but could not score any hits on the pilot and the Captain soon had to call a halt
as they could not risk destroying the plane and releasing the Rizene gas into the atmosphere.
Unable to do anything to stop him, all Omega squad could do was watch helplessly as Gonzalez took off from the airfield and slowly disappeared into the
rising sun.
Looks like it wasn't the best of endings with two men down.
Let me know if you are looking for replacements. I am interested in joining the frontlines ;-)
