Profile
Fusco Wirihana's story is that of a pioneer; after travelling to New Zealand for his education, he picked up the sport of cricket that was very similar to the Kilikiti he had grown up with. After falling in love with the game, he persuaded school friends from Banaba and Tarawa to join him and his university friends as they sought to establish cricket on the scattered islands of Kiribati. Wirihana became the first-ever national cricket captain at exactly the right time as global cricket underwent a massive overhaul as all the countries in the world were invited to build their own Cricket Dynasty.
Kiribati were early converts to this brave new world, and partnerships with Vodafone New Zealand and Pacific Trade & Invest gave players like Wirihana the opportunity to test themselves in ODI tournaments such as the Knockout Cup and Vodafone Quadrangular and even two Test matches, the second of which was the famous Tied Test at Neringa against the more fancied Lithuanians.
Just as the sky looked like the limit though, the money ran out: the Cricket Dynasty initiative ceased to be, Kiribati's sponsors started to desert them. Although they did manage to earn a place in the 2018 World Cup, most of Wirihana's playing opportunities since 2016 have been outside Kiribati in the PlanetCricket Twenty20.
