Piano tips/sheet music

I love to improvise as well, but I'm nowhere near as good as you, obviously. Often it goes well until I play the wrong bass note... then it sounds terrible. :D

Most of the time I start with a melody though and try to work bass into it - or I play the bass of a song that I know and incorporate a melody. I've made a few pieces that I play sometimes, but I guess they aren't really improvised pieces anymore if I can remember them. :p

Anyway, I am deadset going to learn Romeo and Juliet by Dire Straits. Going to dedicate all my concentration to this, would really love to be able to play this. Inspired by a fantastic cover on YouTube.

Also, I'm getting a camera in just under two weeks - will be able to record some stuff then! Birthday. ;)

Good one. Looking forward to seeing/hearing some stuff!

Yep, and if I actually dedicate my time to try to learn this song I should have it done well before those two weeks, so I'll be able to record it straight up. ;)

Almost got the introduction down, but it's quite tricky. I'm not that great so it is taking me a fair while to learn it. :p

Might video myself playing some stuff. I'm going to be rather rusty I fear.

Thanks Steve,

No, I am an autodidact. I sometimes wish I had learned the techniques involved much younger...I would be a lot further than I am if I had been given lessons as a child.

I didn't start playing the guitar or piano until I was fifteen and have never had a lesson (well a couple of guitar lessons, but when the instructor told me the piece I wanted to play was too difficult I left and went to learn it on my own!:p)

My strength is improvisation. I can hear a tune and turn it into something very quickly. One of my best "jobs" was in a theater where I made up the music for this improvisation acting competition that was run there on a weekly basis. Loved that!:)

I know exactly how that feels - I wish I was interested in learning musical instruments when I was a child. Then I had a chance to start guitar around ten years ago, but I couldn't get my head around the most basic of basics - and taking lessons didn't even occur. I mean, I would've been ten years down the line with guitar instead of around half a year. :)

ok my upload speed is too slow, so I can't be bothered uploading it. Recorded myself playing Bridge Over Troubled Water by Simon & Garfunkel and Chopin's Nocturne in Eflat Major. The first song I played alright until the end which I screwed up. For the nocturne I was very rusty. Played the wrong chords all the time and screwed up the ending as well. I haven't had lessons for a few years, and haven't really played my piano much this year though so I suppose it was to be expected. I tried playing some of my exam pieces and they went terribly :p

My thumb is absolutely killing me, hurt it in sport and can barely even move it... so frustrating, gonna struggle to play piano for a while now.

Have the introduction perfect now for R&J, verses shouldn't be too hard as I already know the main chords.

Is that you actually playing Mark or the song itself. Sorry for the confusion!

My new project!:p

The great and one and only Winnifred Atwell! Amazing....

P.S How do i get the youtube video actually here!?

Like this:

MasterBlaster76 added 2 Minutes and 52 Seconds later...

You have to add the code after the /watch?v= bit, in this case: cCsv5TBln6w. If you quote my post, it should show exactly how I did it. :)

It took me a while to figure it out as well, and it doesn't work on all forums. :)

Edit: It should look something like this:

youtube cCsv5TBln6w youtube - just put the first 'youtube' in [] and the second in [/]. Sorry if that didn't make any sense - I couldn't think of a clearer way to explain. :o

Thumb's healed alright, back to playing again. Got the introduction perfect now, as well as the first and second verse. Now to learn the chorus. :)

Romeo and Juliet is definitely the hardest song I've ever learnt though, which probably doesn't say a lot about my ability.

Also, 6 days until birthday and camera. :)

Nice Mark! That's coming on really well now!

Are you using sustain? The last part is a bit murky because of the low bass...if you are using sustain there, ease of a little to make it clearer...nice work mate!

I have a cheap digital piano :( The sustain is either on or off, there is no easing off :(
