Think about it. Gilly had to keep for 320 odd deliveries in an ODI. As well as this, he also had to come out to open the innings. Incredible.

He had a better strike rate than any other opening batsman, and an excellent average for his strike rate. Was part of two formidable combinations, one with Mark Waugh and one with Matthew Hayden. I'm surprised Hayden isn't there, ahead of Chanderpaul.

In test matches, he had to keep for 600 odd balls, sometimes after coming in at 5 down and staying there till the end of the innings. An incredible strike rate for test matches, and what a average for a keeper, or even a No. 7 batsman. What an asset.

One of the greatest all rounders ever. Forever my favourite player.

Plus Gilly made hundreds in test cricket not just at no 7- 144 at no 3 in SL, 100* at no 4 in WI, plus several amazing innings when the team was in deep poop, most notable the 2 tons in NZ in 2005, the 133 in 03 v eng, the 2 tons in India in 01 and 04, the amazing 149* in his 2nd test to win chasing 369, the 1st innings ton v Bangladesh which Gilly rates as one of his best. But I believe his best ton was the one Gilly rates as his best, 2nd test 2002 vs SA at Cape Town, that was the sweetest hitting in his whole career, he just batted out of his skin that day, brutal drives and magnificent timing, one of my favourite innings to re-watch.

how many players averaged over 50? it was a piece of cake batting in this era but lets just ignore the guy that took 500 wickets at a world class average.

it's clear to me, however willing to tolerate it, there still remains a lot of doubt over murali's action.

yeah mcgrath is another one. If you look at the thread on ian chappell, and the general feelings about the 05 ashes, most aussies account losing these or not doing as well as being down to mcgrath being absent.

how can you say such a player wasn't more important than just another batsman that racked up tons of runs.

Ponting is well deserved. Not my favourite batsman, not the best batsman to have played, but definitely been one of the best in this decade.

Kallis, McGrath, Murali, Dravid all unlucky to miss out.
