Politics Discussion (India)

Absolutely right from Jaishankar here. Why do States have to interfere in foreign affairs? This is not the first time someone is doing so. We have had Telangana appoint a Foreign Affairs Minister in the past as well. States should stay within their rights here.

Opening up a debate here- Does India really need a President? He/She/ Whatever is always going to be a rubber stamp regardless of what anyone says. The person cannot interfere in any govt. decisions and has the right to not give his assent to a particular bill. But, this can be only done once. As per the constitution, if the same bill is presented twice, the President has no option but to accept it, with/without changes. During the Emergency, the rubber stamp appointed by Indira ceded all advantage to her, instead of taking matters into his own hand.

It is a colossal waste of the tax payers money to entertain this position. The governments since 2014 have either used this to drive vote bank politics by either appointing Muslims, Dalits, Adivasis to the position OR giving a dignified send off to a senior politician. The icing on the cake is the Vice President- absolutely got no work, enjoys maximum perks and just hogs a political position, enjoying Category Z security. In the history of the country, only one person has taken over the Presidency after the death of the incumbent.

My next attack comes onto the Governor's position- another waste- especially as every state has one. Again, they dont work! For those asking, the Vice President can be substituted by the Chief Justice- considering the chain of command, this position comes right after the Veep. If they need someone as a caretaker, it might as well be the Chief justice.

Maybe, it is time for India to come up with a new constitution, as the old one drawn up by Dr Ambedkar doesnt seem to hold good.

Maybe if we had sensible people up top, but with the people in power and the environment they created will lead to power grabbing, stripping of rights via a new constitution.

Does anyone else feel depressed seeing the political climate in India? Modi was here and the hooray around him is so tacky! When 2014 happened, I was optimistic as a regime change was necessary at that time, when 2019 happened, I was still optimist, half though and this time around, it feels like just dragging. I have stopped reading news in India because I just cannot!

One thing that frustrates me and it does because my dad commutes 4 hours daily to and fro for work for a total of 40km. THE INFRASTRUCTURE is shit and the amount of tax???

I truly feel that I belong neither in US nor in India! What a ****ery of life!

ALSO STOP THE fearsome tweak with Hindu's and Muslims. Nobody, and I mean no religion is danger. Everyone is doing just fine and was doing just fine. Get this government out, its time for change like it was time for change in 2014.

Every single social media warriors from both the side needs to have their social media banned, the rishibagree, the Mr Sinha, Skindoctor, Zubair, everyone!

I don’t think I’m surprised, Modi and his party have done exactly what you’d expect since 2014 given their previous track record. It feels like the Americans in 2016 who voted in Trump wishing for change and were horrified that the latter did exactly what he meant and what you’d expect him to do.

If you truly believe that practitioners of both religions are not at threat and everything is fine then I’d say you’re in a position of privilege sadly. The social media flame wars and the culture wars imported straight from the West don’t help but it is undeniable that there is social and communal discord and it’s being worsened by the lack of action and accountability by political parties and leaders across all levels. The lack of consequences is the most pressing problem that could easily be solved if the political will existed to work on that.

When I meant no religion is in danger, I meant it in a way where the religions are not going away. Practice your religion and let others practice theirs. I am also not saying practitioner's of both religions are not a threat, THEY ARE THE THREAT. The extremists are the threat. Half my day on twitter goes muting these bastards who spread nonsense in the name of religion and hatred for a political party be it be BJP or Congress.

This is what I meant when I said the Sinha's, Nupoors, Zubairs, Rishi Bagree, that poonawala, Amit Malviya all need to be dealt with. They are the ones creating divide the most and parties let them for their benefits.

Now Pawan Kalyan getting into it, eventually you are going to lose the public.

I really hope India's landscape changes in terms of politics, I see the cringeworthy videos of NRI's dancing on Modi Modi and all I want to do slap each and everyone of them! Like STFU! I get you adore the man, dont make any one GODLY!

I am hoping for a regime change next election and hoping Congress can come back in power so finally we can see what Rahul Gandhi wants to do, give him a chance as well.

2004-2014, Congress was in power and the country saw a lot many scams during that time period. Yes, the Congress had the numbers back and instituted dubious characters as governors of states. This did take the advantage away from the BJP in a couple of states. The Modi change was necessary back then. The BJP would still have come to power in 2014- Modi or no Modi.

2019- As Bevab pointed out, Modi did exactly what he promised and delivered on the manifesto. The Saffron wave was strong and they roared back to power. Also was helped on the way by stupid statements by Rahul Gandhi.

2024- I get why you might feel this way. The BJP has tried to create a Hindu centric nation and this does attribute to a lot of tensions among people. Now, I am not against the concept of a Hindu nation, however, those in power need to understand that the existence of a Hindu nation doesn't belittle other religions. Forget other religions, those propagating 'Hindu nation ideologies' arent aware of the Hindu' ways themselves. This is what creates a concern.

Hinduism has been a way of life. Unlike Islam, no one is asking you to pray 5 times a day. One can pray the way they want. The BJP elements at the center have been trying to control a culturally diverse nation. Remember the ITC advertisement in Kolkata? The one where it was depicted that Ma Durga was eating mutton? It is normal in West Bengal to offer non-veg to the Gods. It is also normal in some parts of Maharashtra. If the 2 bald guys haven't seen it, doesn't mean that it cannot exist.

As for a change in 2029- I doubt it, the country doesn't have a proper opposition. The Congress has been putting their faith behind Rahul for the last 15 years and it has yielded no fruit. They need to realign and start working for the betterment of the people, if they are to expect anything. I had high hopes from the current Karnataka govt, but they are embroiled in various inter Congress fights themselves. It wont work this way. Either the Congress works OR the BJP screws up. Chances of both happening are minimal, but either needs to happen for the Congress to return to power.

Maharashtra elections- the result was quite unexpected. I feared the BJP wouldn't be able to hold onto their power in the sate, considering they had abused the Governor's powers from 2019-2021. Additionally, Uddhav (Shiv Sena) had done a pretty decent job during his time as the Chief Minister (during Covid). Surprised toe see BJP literally sweep the state (132 seat on their own, 229 in the alliance) out of a possible 288.

While the BJP's own standing doesnt surpirse, what surprises me is the performance of its allies- Shiv Sena (Shinde) and NCP (Ajit) werent the parties one would expect to win. Shiv Sena, I could still understand having split the vote and all. However, Ajit Pawar's NCP winning 41 is nothing short of a miracle here.

Tbf the biggest emphasis there on what I highlighted in bold. That is exatcly what its impossible to get people to understand. And that is the reason things aren't good

Congress wants to impeach the Indian Vice-President! This will be fun! I mean, why raise a vote of no confidence knowing that you are going to lose?

What are your thoughts on the 'One Nation One Election' Bill?

I personally am for this one. It makes perfect sense for a nation this big to do so. Honestly, can't think of any factors that may cause a hindrance here.
