Is it something to do with the type of liquid ?
Either that or very translucent ice cubes at the bottom

It's just normal black coffee, the glass is frosted, you'd be able to see through to the other side if it was a clear glass.

That is a good guess though! The coffee was straight from the jug once it had cooled down a bit.
