Ram Slam T20 match-fixing: Ex-Protea to be charged

Cape Town - According to reports, the “intermediary” in the ongoing Ram Slam T20 match-fixing case is a former Proteas player.

In mid-December 2015, Cricket South Africa (CSA) confirmed that its Anti-Corruption and Security Unit had charged a perpetrator - operating as an intermediary - under its Anti-Corruption Code for contriving to "fix, or otherwise improperly influence aspects of last year's tournament".

In addition, the "intermediary" was also charged with failing or refusing to co-operate with the investigation.

The tournament, which ran between November 1 and December 12, 2015, was won by the Titans who beat the Dolphins by seven wickets in a one-sided final at SuperSport Park in Centurion.

CSA has remained tight-lipped over the identity of the individual to date, but according to respected cricket writer and commentator Neil Manthorp, the ringleader is a former national player - who is almost certain to face prison time for his actions.

In addition, a legal case is being prepared against a number of domestic players for corruption during this season's tournament. Other players are expected to be charged with the lesser crime of "failure to report" suspicious or illegal activity.

Sadly, the revelations will no doubt reopen the wounds of Hansie-gate in 2000 when former Proteas skipper Hansie Cronje was convicted of dealing with illegal bookmakers.

Cronje, who was banned from cricket for life due to his role in the match-fixing scandal, died in a plane crash on June 1, 2002.

While the International Cricket Council (ICC) has gone to great lengths to rid the game of unscrupulous individuals, it's clear those willing to tarnish the gentleman's game, still exist within the sport.

The world's eyes will be firmly glued on CSA to see how the governing organisation in South Africa deal with the latest blight on the sport.

I agree no mercy to be shown to the fixers. Even in the IPL, Sreesanth's career is finished. No matter what innocence Sreesanth proves, he will never play any decent level cricket again. The other two had no future anyway.

Not exactly clear but is the person in question definitely a player who was in the ram slam? If so there's not exactly many options around for former international players.

^ So basically we are talking about some former International who acted as an intermediary between the bookie and the player who fixed/was approached to fix.

That's what the reports are saying. No names yet so have to be confirmed.

Johannesburg - Former Proteas, Titans and Lions player Gulam Bodi is apparently a key figure in the investigation into the latest cricket match-fixing scandal, Netwerk24 has reported.

It reported that three sources had confirmed he was being investigated. It also said he had been provisionally suspended in December.

News24 has also independently confirmed that Bodi is being investigated.

2 ODIs and 1 T20I, just about an international player I suppose. Its great that its not a high profile player. Nobody's being upto no good is (or seems to be) much less of a scandal.

More info in the Pretoria news today. He apparently met 4 proteas (none in the current national squads) and 4 local players. Meetings took place at parking lots, hotels and an adult entertainment club. Offer was R800 000, Bodi would take R150 000 commission. The players had to insure less then 9 runs scored in overs 9 and 10. They were introduced to Indian gentlemen who also promised to provide untraceable cellphones.

The players turned it down. Not named for now due to legal reasons

Thami Tsolekile named in match-fixing investigation

Thami Tsolekile (Gallo)

Cape Town - Former Proteas and current Highveld Lions wicketkeeper, Thami Tsolekile, has been named as one of the players allegedly under investigation in the ongoing Ram Slam T20 match-fixing case that has rocked South African cricket, according to a British online report.

Tsolekile, 35, who has also represented the Cape Cobras and South Africa 'A', captained the Highveld Lions in last year's Ram Slam tournament in which the Lions finished second from bottom, missing the playoffs.

According to the Guardian website, Tsolekile is alleged to have been paid at least R75 000 to influence aspects of last year’s Ram Slam competition which ran from November 1 to December 12, 2015.

According to Cricket South Africa’s (CSA) anti-corruption code, Tsolekile faces a minimum five-year ban if found guilty of wrongdoing.

Tsolekile played three Tests for the Proteas, making his debut against India in Kanpur in 2004.

He went on to play against India in Kolkata a week later, before concluding his Test career against England in Port Elizabeth later that year.

He scored 47 runs in five innings at an average of 9.40 and took six catches.

When contacted by the Guardian, Tsolekile denied all knowledge of the matter and did not wish to comment further.

A spokesperson for CSA also declined to comment while the investigation was ongoing.

Tsolekile's alleged involvement follows hot on the heels of CSA's confirmation last Thursday that former Proteas batsman Gulam Bodi is the "intermediary" who has been charged under its Anti-Corruption Code for contriving to fix, or otherwise improperly influence aspects of the 2015 Ram Slam T20.

The confirmation of Bodi's guilt and Tsolekile's alleged involvement may well be the tip of the iceberg with at least one more former national player believed to be under investigation, while numerous domestic cricketers are facing charges of failing to report approaches.
