I play Club Cricket in the US. The ball has hurt my stomach a couple of times while batting.

Do you think people will consider me to be a sissy if I wear baseball style armor on the chest and stomach while batting?

Please be honest about your views. I won't take it personally.

Yes. Man up. Just hit the ball instead of getting pounded in the body. I personally only wear pads, gloves and a helmet. No need for thigh pads or arm guards, just hit the damn thing.

Anyone else watching Michael Buble? I would possibly turn for that fella!

Dude, if guys like Tendulkar, Ponting, Lara, or even tailenders can face the fastest bowlers in the world with just a cup (most important!), pads, helmet, and gloves, you can play club trundlers with the same thing.

Yes. You play in America.

Anyone playing bowlers <130k and wearing a chest guard is an instant pussy.

They actually have a box, really high quality pads, thigh pads, inner thigh pads, gloves and a helmet, and some have a chest guard.

It's not like they rock up in 10 year old gear that's worn and not very protective.

I reckon not wearing a helmet is stupid, especially against paceman.

I saw first hand my opening bowler cop one in the jaw from another opening bowler, in 3rds last year. Off to hospital, broken jaw, blood etc. It can be easily avoided by a helmet. Helmets are safe and comfortable anyway. They aren't a hassle.

Plus, I know I'd be much better at getting my head into line and watch the ball better with the fact I know I'll be safe if something goes wrong and I get hit in the head or whatever.

That said, when we used to play at school, we wore no protective gear at all.

NYC League is decent, one of the more reputable USA leagues after Central East and the Cali ones.

If you're not the best batsmen and don't always connect then why not. Do what you want. No point asking others, especially here - It's an all male forum (pretty much) and many people feel the need to try keep up a tough guys image and seem like a 'real man'. If you feel like a better batsmen when wearing it then go for it.

But I am a real man, Matt! :p

Seriously though, I wouldn't wear one even when facing quick bowlers. I think the more gear you wear the less likely you are of hitting the actual ball and I can imagine a chest guard really restricts your movement.

What number do you bat at?

I disagree with Jack here. I personally bat with a helmet, thigh pad as well as all the usual other protection, but that is because with uni cricket we have had Asian's come over who have been putting the ball down in the 80's (mph) and after I saw one guy lose his front teeth, I ain't too keen on damaging my fantastic looks :p I just think you gotta do what makes you feel like you can play to your biggest strength, tho if a guy walked in wearing baseball protection he would get sledged shitless, even if he scored a ton :laugh

Also, I am being totally whipped by this new gf, who told me I ain't allowed near her for a week cause she is revising for uni exams. I mean come on, who wouldn't want to see me?

Ooo, me, me, me!

On topic - I think its stupid to not wear a helmet to the quicks, taking a top edge onto the jaw from a spinner is ok, hurts but generally doesn't break. Against the quicks, you mistime something and cop it on any part of your unprotected head you're either dead or in some serious trouble.
