For committing murder there's the assumption of life imprisonment, with a minimum of about 13 years without parole.

They don't have tvs in their cell. But there is underfloor heating. That's more because if they didn't have it they'd freeze. And they can't install heaters in the cells because otherwise there would be something for the prisoners to commit suicide on

If some of the more serious crimes committed here were done in America, you'd be locked away for the rest of your life. The punishment is no deterrent here. People know that if they commit a crime, the penalty will be small, the prisons will be nice and if they behave themselves, they could be out in half the time.

America has the most penal system in the world. We're second. But we're a long long way behind.

If you're good you do get it. Maybe it's only in the minimum security prisons.

Let them freeze I say. If you did, though, it'll be a breach of their human rights and all that noise.

This is from an ODT article
Each wing has one flat-screen television screwed tight to the wall while prisoners are allowed their own television sets in their cells, subject to approval.
I didn't realise they also have a full size rugby field. Come on, that money could've gone anywhere but they decide to give a medium - maximum security prison a full size rugby field. Surely the Basketball courts and Gym is enough!

But if jail terms isn't life only 26 years?

Some of the worst murderers here come out after like 10 - 15 years, which is just ridiculous.

No wonder NZs in debt, wasting all this money on people who don't deserve it.

I would guess that the prisoner themselves may have to pay for the televisions in their cells.

They need a rugby field so they can become like that movie where the prisoners play American football and beat the guards :p

What I think is the problem is the amount of offences that result in prison sentences - there should be more remedial ways to punish people that can help them turn over new pages rather than keeping them locked up.

I thought the punishments in case of crime/corruption were severe in New Zealand ? From what I read , New Zealand is the least corrupt country next to Finland , so I'm rather surprised that the consequences aren't severe having read through your (NZlers) conversations . :spy

Our debt's expected to be like 15 billion in their (half yearly?) budget next week...

Corruption refers to the government doesn't it?

Corruption is more governments/businesses.

We're the second most penal country in the world. (lol penal). We have the second highest proportion of people in our prisons.

Most OECD countries have massive debt so it's not too much of a problem. We're still AAA credit rating

Well let us know what the TV arrangements are like in prison when you go there :p

For me 'remedial' and 'punish' wouldn't go in the same sentence. Remedial is like curing or fixing something. You don't cure someone to punish them. It's just that sentences handed down don't reflect the severity of the crime.

I feel prison sentences, but shorter ones and including some program to try and help the person. Depending on the crime. Others you could just have strict supervision terms along with the remedial terms.
