It costs something like 80k to keep a person in prison for a year. Quite stupid.
 
I know, we're too PC here (not PlanetCricket, the other PC), they have to have all of these rights etc.
 
They don't call the prison just out of Dunedin the "Milton Hilton" for nothing. Prisoners are allowed their own TV's in their rooms, there's underfloor heating... 250 million dollars for a prison that holds 300 odd people is ridiculous imo.
 
Yea, NZs justice system is pretty warped. There's really no bad consequence for committing a crime.
 
Last time I checked it was only 13 years for murder, 10 years before you can apply for bail.
 
If some of the more serious crimes committed here were done in America, you'd be locked away for the rest of your life. The punishment is no deterrent here. People know that if they commit a crime, the penalty will be small, the prisons will be nice and if they behave themselves, they could be out in half the time.
