Anybody seen the film Lagaan? Currently reading a chapter on it for my dissertation and wondering whether I should actually spend 4 hours watching the bloody thing...

It's a great movie, but I don't know if a non-Indian audience will like it. Although, it was nominated for an Oscar.

My dissertation is on identity within the sports films genre, looking at masculinity, race and class and national identity. Seems to fit in very well in terms of national identity, using cricket as a way to identify India as a nation, as well as the obvious race and class divide between the locals and the British.

Read that 80 minutes are set aside for the cricket match itself! Crazy.

Skip the songs and it's tolerable. Cheesy lines and predictable plot but then again it's a Bollywood film so that comes with the territory.

The Oscar nomination was probably more of a courtesy than anything else. No way Bollywood films can compete in the foreign film category. Too many good movies with actual substance from other countries

As much as I love a good piss take of the Texan accent, he was referring to other foreign countries outside the US with substance.

I saw one once and absolutely hated it. Ludicrous storyline interspersed with some non-sequital dance numbers and poor dialogue.
