I know what a lovely picture of a greatly talented bastmen... and Ed

Ed Cowan: A disgrace to brains....

The main thing I am taking out of that picture is Ed Cowan's stonewash denim jeans, an 80's classic!

I like those too. I have one stonewashed jeans from Lee and I absolutely love it.

Interesting and saddening. Judging by the comments, it seems like a big problem in NZ.

I think it's a very rare case for someone that young to be exposed to it, but there is a reasonably strong drinking culture at high school because it's the "cool" thing to do, at a guess I'd say that maybe half of people have started by 16 (maybe 17). I'm not sure what it's like elsewhere, but at my age (early 20s) it's unusual for someone not to drink, other than for religion I only know a couple of people who choose not to.

Yep, it's not unusual to start getting drunk here every weekend from around 14. We have a binge drinking culture as they like to call it. Not too dissimilar to England, right? I started drinking at 16, but very little and certainly wasn't getting drunk every weekend. I was late in comparison to most people I knew.

9 is ridiculous though - if anything it sheds light on how poorly some people are cared for here in the more depressed areas, as it was apparently the boy's aunt that gave him the alcohol. That is the appalling thing.

yeh kinda like here, but sounds worse there as you have presented it.

But then if I lived in constant fear of earthquakes I'd have probably started drinking around aged 9 too.

Hang on there, since when do we live in constant fear of earthquakes:lol?

First time I drunk properly (vommed on three 2.2 Woodies) I was 18 and that was pretty late compared to most people. Had beers before then but never enough to feel anything, at most 2 or 3.

Like thedon says there are a lot of people drinking most weekends at 15/16.

First thing that comes up after googling new zealand binge drinking has these stats (I'm assuming young people are under 18s):

Access to alcohol is not a problem for most young people, of whom:

:: 70 percent report that getting hold of alcohol is not a problem
:: 24 percent report they can afford as much alcohol as they want
:: 32 percent report they make no attempt to limit the amount of alcohol they drink
:: 30 percent report they make no attempt to try not to drink so much that they forget what they were doing or what happened
:: many claim that it is OK to get drunk; 59 percent report that it is OK to get drunk as long as it is not every day
:: 61 percent disagree that it is never OK to get drunk
:: 42 percent report they have a drink at least once every two weeks (25 percent at least once every week)
:: 58 percent have consumed five or more drinks on at least one occasion (Palmer, 2007).
