New Zealand have appointed Martin Crowe as their new coach and he will take over from John Bracewell immediately as Bracewell resigned at the end of the test series against Australia. Bracewell's contract doesn't finish until April but agreed with New Zealand Cricket(NZC) that it would be best for Crowe to take charge ahead of the home series against West Indies, which begins in December.
Crowe, who is New Zealand's best batsman and also the coach of an Indian Premier League team Royal Challengers Bangalore has been a television commentator for Sky and was new Zealand Cricket's first choice for the coaching job. Other leading candidates had included Northern District coach Andy Moles, former Indian coach Greg Chappell, New South Wales coach Matthew Mott and South Africans Mickey Arthur and Graham Ford, until they all announced they would not pursue the position.
Crowe said the immediate future for New Zealand would be a period of development after seval experienced players retired in some cases to play in the ICL."We have lots many senior and experience players over the past two years and its a rebuilding period,"Crowe told TV NZ. "We've got to get a play to move forward, set our goals and become No 5. or 6 in Test cricket in year;s time, and move forward from there." New Zealand are currently ranked No. 8 in ICC's Test ranking ahead of only Bangladesh and Zimbabwe. That could be a starting point for Crowe but NZC's CEO Justin Vaughan is confident he is the man for the job.
"We field Martin is the right man for the job. He was new Zealand's best batsman and his knowledge about the game can really be helpful for our young inexperience talented players." Vaughan said. "He has some coaching experience with Bangalore team of the IPL last year and he also bring over 15 years of experience in the game."
Martin Crowe, 45, former New Zealand captain and New Zealand's best ever right handed batsman, was chosen by a selection panel including John Wright who was an early favourite to replace Bracewell due to the experience as the coach of India. But Wright has been given the job of the national selector but will also work as an adviser of Martin Crowe.
John Bracewell ended his five year stint with the national side during which he guided the Kiwis to the semi-finals in the World Cup and also the World Twenty20 in 2007, as well as the Champions Trophy in 2006. Vaughan paid tribute to Bracewell. "John has achieved tremendous success with the New Zealand side, including Test series wins against South Africa, Sri Lanka and the West Indies, and one-day series victories over England, Australia, the West Indies, South Africa and Pakistan, and also Bangladesh."
New Zealand Cricket are set to announce their fixture for the 2009 calender year soon. Only news coming is that the 2009 calender year will start with the West Indies touring New Zealand followed by the Indians. More news to follow.
