New Zealand appoint new Coach
cricinfo staff
20th December 2008

New Zealand have appointed Martin Crowe as their new coach and he will take over from John Bracewell immediately as Bracewell resigned at the end of the test series against Australia. Bracewell's contract doesn't finish until April but agreed with New Zealand Cricket(NZC) that it would be best for Crowe to take charge ahead of the home series against West Indies, which begins in December.

Crowe, who is New Zealand's best batsman and also the coach of an Indian Premier League team Royal Challengers Bangalore has been a television commentator for Sky and was new Zealand Cricket's first choice for the coaching job. Other leading candidates had included Northern District coach Andy Moles, former Indian coach Greg Chappell, New South Wales coach Matthew Mott and South Africans Mickey Arthur and Graham Ford, until they all announced they would not pursue the position.

Crowe said the immediate future for New Zealand would be a period of development after seval experienced players retired in some cases to play in the ICL."We have lots many senior and experience players over the past two years and its a rebuilding period,"Crowe told TV NZ. "We've got to get a play to move forward, set our goals and become No 5. or 6 in Test cricket in year;s time, and move forward from there." New Zealand are currently ranked No. 8 in ICC's Test ranking ahead of only Bangladesh and Zimbabwe. That could be a starting point for Crowe but NZC's CEO Justin Vaughan is confident he is the man for the job.

"We field Martin is the right man for the job. He was new Zealand's best batsman and his knowledge about the game can really be helpful for our young inexperience talented players." Vaughan said. "He has some coaching experience with Bangalore team of the IPL last year and he also bring over 15 years of experience in the game."

Martin Crowe, 45, former New Zealand captain and New Zealand's best ever right handed batsman, was chosen by a selection panel including John Wright who was an early favourite to replace Bracewell due to the experience as the coach of India. But Wright has been given the job of the national selector but will also work as an adviser of Martin Crowe.

John Bracewell ended his five year stint with the national side during which he guided the Kiwis to the semi-finals in the World Cup and also the World Twenty20 in 2007, as well as the Champions Trophy in 2006. Vaughan paid tribute to Bracewell. "John has achieved tremendous success with the New Zealand side, including Test series wins against South Africa, Sri Lanka and the West Indies, and one-day series victories over England, Australia, the West Indies, South Africa and Pakistan, and also Bangladesh."

New Zealand Cricket are set to announce their fixture for the 2009 calender year soon. Only news coming is that the 2009 calender year will start with the West Indies touring New Zealand followed by the Indians. More news to follow.

West Indies select three debutants for New Zealand tour

West Indies have named three debutants, including the Australian born Brendan Nash for their Test tour of New Zealand next year. Lionel Baker from Leeward Islands and Leon Johnson the Guyana bastman are the other two uncapped players.

The squad will also feature the inclusions of left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn, fast bowler Fidel Edwards and an extra wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh. Inclusion of former Queensland batsman Brendan Nash, who last year left Queensland for Jamaica, continues his rise following his ODI debut in Canada in August. Johnson also made his initial one-day appearance in Canada and the two men with the new-comer Baker will try to find place in the Test line-up.

John Dyson, West Inides coach hopes that a series win would keep his team over New Zealand, who at No. 8 are just one place behind them in the ICC Test Ranking. Dyson banked on his fast bowlers to make the perfect use of the conditions in the country.

"We have a strong pace attack in Jermoe Taylor, Darren Powell and Fidel Edwatds along with promising new comer Lionel Baker. Nash will be a handy on the New Zealand wickets and Benn should find the wickets more to his like compared with the flat wickets he has bowled on over here."

The first Test in Dunedin starts on the January 11 and the second, in Napier on the 19th. The squad for the five-match one day series and the two Twenty20 internationals in New Zealand will be named later.

Squad for New Zealand Tests Chris Gayle (capt), Ramnaresh Sarwan, Lionel Baker, Carlton Baugh, Sulieman Benn, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Sewnarine Chattergoon, Fidel Edwards, Leon Johnson, Xavier Marshall, Brendan Nash, Daren Powell, Denesh Ramdin (wk), Jerome Taylor.

Three debutants will hopefully turn out good for West Indies as they stop you in your tracks. ;)

Nah doesn't matter who Windies call up in my opinion, as the Kiwi team is just too strong for them. I really do feel New Zealand are massive underachievers and can hopefully turn the corner.

Good stuff, Shan.

New Zealand A squad announced

New Zealadn Cricket has announced their 12-man A squad for the three-day warm-up game against the touring West Indies starting from the 5th of January at Eden Park, Auckland.

The squad includes internationals like Jacob Oram, James Marshall, Jeetan Patel, Peter Fulton and Ian Butler. All the above internationals will be fighting for a place in the test squad for the series at home against West Indies and India. Jacob Oram has recovered to play cricket after suffering series of injuries keeping him out from the Australian tour. Ian Butler and Peter Fulton are also given a chance to make their comebacks in cricket for their national side after suffering with injuries.

Jeetan Patel and Mark Gillespie who have performed well in the limited overs game but failed to make a mark in the longer version of the game are given a chance along with Brendon McCullum's brother Nathan McCullum and James Marshall. Auckland opener Tim McIntosh has been selected after some impressive performances for the state team. The squad will be coached by Mike Hesson of Otago and managed by Glenn Turner, the former New Zealand captain.

Squad for warm-up game against West IndiesTim McIntosh, Aaron Redmond, Peter Fulton, James Marshall, Neil Broom, Jacob Oram, Gareth Hopkins, Nathan McCullum, Ian Butler, Mark Gillespie, Ewen Thompson, Jeetan Patel, Craig Cumming.

I wonder if Tim will be given an oppurtunity after performing well domestically. Looking forward to seeing Oram, but is Brendan McCullum not in the team? Strange, although it's just for a warmup game. The team is looking quite strong but I don't think it's good enough to smash the West Indies.

Good stuff, Shan.

I'm a bit lost on the NZ A thing, How are you going to do that? As far as I know, The NZA thing isn't on ICC.

But brilliant start, finally a new Zealand Story:) Two in fact!

New Zealand A dominate Day One
cricinfo staff
5th January, 2009

The West indies had a rough start to their New Zealand tour, New Zealand A completely dominating the day one of their three-day match at the Eden Park Outer Oval. Riding on Ian Butler's 5 wicket haul which bowled the visitors out for just 164 runs on board and then Peter Fulton's unbeaten half century. New Zealand A finished day one trailing by just 42 runs.

The West Indians enjoyed a good begining after wet conditions forced a delayed start by 10 mins. The opening partnership of Chris Gayle and Xavier Marshall put on 45 runs inclduing some eye-catching shots. But Oram got the breakthrough, as Marshall edged one to keeper Hopkins for 16. Sarwan and skipper Gayle tried to build the innings but 23 runs later, Butler got Gayle plumb for 32 of 76 balls. Chanderpaul and Sarwan did the scoring with some glorious boundaries but Sarwan played one shot to many and gave an easy catch to Neil Broom at point of the left handed medium pacer Thompson for 28. After Sarwan departed the Windies middle order collapsed to some good and accurate bowling by the Kiwis. Australian born Brendan Nash gave an easy catch straight to the bowler Butker for 5 and he was followed by the reliable Chanderpaul as he edged an outstanding delivery to Fulton at second slip for 26. Gillespie got his first of the match as he got rid of Chattergoon for just 1 and Nathan McCullum to got his first wicket in the form of Benn for 8 caught by keeper Hopkins.

Fidel Edwards and keeper Dinesh Ramdin did some restoring work of the innings as the two added a valueable 40 runs including some slog boundaries. The partnership frustrated the Kiwi bowlers but Gillespie came to the rescue as he got rid of Edwards by taking an simple catch of his own bowling for 18. And then Ian Butler wrapped up the innings by getting rid of tailenders Jermone Taylor for 1 and Powell of the first ball. West Indies were bowled out forjust 164 runs within 53 overs on day. But unlike the West Indies, New Zealand A side got of to a bad start losing Auckland opener Tim McIntosh in the first over itself. McIntosh gave an easy catch to Gayle at second slip of Jerome Taylor for just 4. Redmond followed McIntosh for 6 giving an easy catch to Nash at covers again of Taylor's bowling. Bringing the spinner on earlier paid of as Suileman Benn got rid of James Marshall for just 1 and he was soon followed by Neil Broom in next over as he nicked one to Ramdin of Benn. Kiwis A side looked in deep trouble at 37 for the loss of 4 wickets but then it was all Fulton and Oram who stoled the show.

The duo put an 81 run partnerhip and helping their side survive day one by losing just 4 wickets and trailing by just 46 runs. The two batsman who missed the last series due to injuries looked like they were back to their best. The two entertained the crowd with some brilliant boundaries most of them hit by Peter Fulton who raised his deserved half century. West Indies will be hoping to bowl out the Kiwis out early tomorrow and also score some runs which they failed to do in first innings.
