tendulkar
is he getting too old to play now.?
The way he played in the 1st test.....94 off 204 balls.Last time round he played slowly was in australia in waughs farewell test.he scored 241 off 700 balls.India had drawn that test too.
Does he desrve the backing he is getting from the players for playing slowly.?
I have only heard kumble backing him.
There were'nt any comments from the indian skipper on this.

that australian match you spoke (steve waughs farewell) i think he just batted to get into form. i dont think they were overly worried about winning that match. they allready had the trophy. it seemed they were just going to bat as long as they could.
as for wether he is to old? definatly not. hes the best thing since bradman. he will go for many more years.

Gone nutz or what? 32 and old?

That 241 in Sydney was a GREAT innings...its not easy to curb your instincts for that long...not a single cover drive...and it did not in anyway diminish India's chances of a win...it only enhanced them...there was a sparkling 60 in the second innings too...India did not win coz of Bhajji's absence, Patel's keeping, Bucknor's umpiring and more importantly coz they were faced by Aussies who were not daunted by facing 700 on 3rd morning...any other team would have wilted...

Nobody in the whole world can say that he knows what Sachin was going thru in that second half of 94 of Mohali...coz no one has trodden on that path...35th test century is not a joke...agreed his batting didn't look as beautiful as it has in the past 34 centuries...but i think we can give him a break on that one...and in both cases he had partners for some time who played with a strikerate of 70-80...and the skipper is not commenting on it coz he was the one whose entry induced the slow scoring...and his very very special man couldn't lift it too...

And we easily forget that he has scored more than 1000 runs in last 11 tests that he has played...we easily forget that he was 197* when Dravid declared in Multan and that in noway was a slow innings...we forget the 60 on a pitch which was unplayable for the best team in the world and lifted India to the victory...and we forget the lone stellar performance in Asia cup...the problem is that we easily forget the peaks and always remember the troughs...sad and pathetic...

just coz we live in an age where the fastest double hundred record is clinched thrice in a month or where Sehwag bats as if thats the only session he is gonna get to bat or Gilli invariably lifts his team with a swashbuckling century, we cannot expect every batsmen to follow suit...For 34 centuries and 39 half centuries - for 9973 test runs a man has carried the hopes and expectations of a nation of 100 crore...its fair to say that he has the right to dedicate the 35th ton to himself in the way he pleases and that he has it in him to play as long as he thinks he can

too gud sachin.
that was the best reply possible to that question of iceman.

well donr mate

what a pointless thread. If Don bradman said that sachin is the nearest to seeing himself play, he must be good.

the point was whether he is past it or not

No way is he past it....
I'd advise you to be in his situation during that last innings and then comment on that innings.

I agree with Sachinisgod because....

So just because he gets a few scores that took him longer than normal means he's too old and past it?! I don't think people should even question him and his age.

Alec Stewart, OK not the best player in the world, but he retired when he was 40 didn't he? If not it, was close to that age. Other than 2003, he was always a super player for England.

There's no reason why age should stop you playing at the highest level, and as Sachin said, Tendulkar is only 32! That's no real age. Look at Warne, McGrath and a few other Australian's that are in their 30's, does this mean they are past it? Don't think so somehow.

Everyone's pretty much exhausted this topic. I did not watch too much of Sachin's batting in the second session (when his scoring rate slowed down) because I wasn't there or becuase India's scoring rate was much too slow. It was a little appalling, though, that his first 47 came from around 64 balls and his second 47 came from about 130. But then, India's run rate fell from 4.5 to 3.2 or something like that, so he just contributed.

That apart, you lose many things if Sachin retires:

1. A huge cricket fan-following (perhaps good for Indian sports)--people cheer when the second wicket falls because Sachin is coming in

2. The fear from the opposition--sure everyone claims that there's nothing in a name but who would you rather play against - Elton Chigambura or Sachin Tendulkar

3. That brilliant googly that stumped Moin Khan...not stumped but stumped his thought processes

4. Leadership on the field, good fielding, etc...he's just a great all-round influence.

Sadly, he will have to retire one day. I just do not think that day is here yet and I am sure he will know when it is and take the team's best interests into consideration. I would say Tendulkar can easily play until WC2007 unless he is injured, and maybe even after that. I am fairly confident that he will outlast Laxman and Ganguly, though maybe not Dravid.

iceman one more correction - he scored 241* in 436 balls in 613 minutes in a team total of 705 in Sydney...this post is abt facts and getting them straight here... :)

Well just found out the stats of all his centuries...and it just proves that every now and then he comes up with such a slow knock...just we didnt mind it then...

a few highlights:
- His third century came with a strikerate of 70.8 against the aussies in Perth in 1992...the one that followed it - against SA in Johannesburg came at 41.1 - his slowest till date...

- He played at his fastest in his golden year - 1997/98...strikerates of 60.6 vs SL, 81.1 vs Aussies at Chennai and 85.5 vs Aussies at Bangalore...74.8 vs NZ at Wellington...but in that wonderful knock of 136 at Chennai vs Pakistan he scored at 49.8

- After that he crossed the strike rate of 80 only in one century - against SA in Bloemfontein...Sehwag's Debut...Sachin scored 155 at 84.2/100

- I can see in this list that every time his team needs it or a record beckons, he digs himself deep - provided he is faced with some hostile conditions...if I remember well the slowest century vs SA came in a drawn test and cricinfo tells me that his 111 was a part of a team total of 227. His 136 is too famous to be elaborated upon. Then came the record of 29 centuries...He was gonna equal his own sirjee - and he dug in once again in Port of Spain - I remember seeing this century live till 3 in the morning and nearly failing in the exam at 8 :p ... his strike rate in that was 45.

- after that his strike rate has never crossed above 60 except against Bangladesh in his 34th ton...coincidentally this fact coincides with scores of 193, 176, 241, 194 and 248...this last one came at 65/100...but against Bangla bowlers...this proves that now he concentrating more on scoring big hundreds rather than just hundreds...and it is only beneficial to Indian team's cause...because that 193 at Leeds won the match for India, 176 at Kolkata saved it from WI, 241 at Sydney discussed already, 194 at Multan and 248 in Dhaka...and btw 94 in 204 balls in Mohali(strike rate of 46) at least ensured that Pakistan didnt have the time to take 10 Indian wickets in the second innings...and the last time he played above a strike rate of 80 - at Bloemfontein - India lost...

these stats are not meant as a reply to any post...just felt like studying a pattern of his centuries - if any...enjoyed it...i agree - it didn't seem nice to watch him defend everything as if it was a bombshell in Mohali but still it just conveyed one message - he wanted to get done with that record ASAP...it din't happen and Pakistan should be wary of him at Kolkata...btw if one analyses Gavaskar's 34, or Waugh's 32 tons then he would be surprised to find that those guys played till the age of 35-37 and never ever crossed 80/100...

any other devotee here????

Thats a big joke iceman!! The players not coming out in defense of him doesnt mean that they do not support his game of playing slow. Its just that the Indian players are quiet and only some come out and speak.

I feel he has matured over the years and his game has changed and he now plays more responsibly. If he plays like how Sehwag is now (which was the way he played before!), the probability of his wicket falling would increase. The more aggressive you are, the more chances the bowlers get. The bowlers need only one ball to get a wicket, whearas you need all balls that you face to preserve your wicket! I dont find anything wrong in Tendulkar's game now and I wish he continues for a long long time.

But I was upset with his 94 off 202 balls this latest innings. Except Kaneria, no other bowler was truly world class (IN THIS TEST!). I think he gave too much respect to Pakistan by digging in that much. His 241* against Australia is fine becoz thats the best bowling attack in the world even without Mc Grath and Warne!

What a useless thread.
Its up to Sachin to decide. If he feels old, he'll retire.

We're not talking performance here. If iceman's post was performance related i.e. Sachin isn't performing, then it is understandable. But it looks like he is scoring many runs. This is a freakin' test match. You ARE supposed to take it easy and score slow.
