Stock placement is fine. Its looking messy. Just follow some tuts. I recommand ava tut by @Ali.

That's a good try mate. It's not overdone, not stretched, so you've a fine start so far.

You've misplaced the stock, render must be on either side. Placing render at the middle would not allow you to find space for using lights and text. In wallpapers, covers and signatures it'd be okay; you still have enough area left on both sides. In avatars, you have to implement everything within a 100x100 stock, so it's not easy to use effects when the whole space is occupied by the render.

Also find out some tutorials on using lights, texts and various effects, and follow them. You'll need to practice couple of tuts to get going. Good luck.
