Your Cricket Slowcoach's season diary (new update includes video footage)

I don't know if what you said doesn't make any sense because I'm drunk but wtf did you just say?

Here is some footage of me bowling, check out the funky wrist action on my legspinner, I have no idea what's going on there.

Note that the driveway was very slippery due to recent rain and I was unable to try too hard for fear of slipping over and landing on my head (thus explaining the half-assed nature of my "fast" ball).

Well here I am, back again (yeah, him again, "oh no, what has this idiot got to say this time?" I hear you thinking).

Well, we are two games into our season, playing 2nd grade, 2 losses so far, but we have done ok.

First game was a 2 day match on a synthetic pitch, we were 5 for 37, I batted at number 7 and made a streaky gritty 12 to help steady the ship a bit, I got bowled by a ball I didn't see after some talking in the slips distracted me. The older guys batted well to dig us out of trouble. We ended up with 177. I had to umpire for a while, I may have cheated slightly and given one of our batsman not out when he was plumb, but don't tell anyone (he was only on about 5 at the time, and he ended up saving us during a last wicket partnership and top scoring with 44 not out).

17 overs to bowl before stumps, they started slowly but didn't lose any wickets, then I got to bowl the last over of the day. My first over for a new club, after 8 years without a game at any level. My first ball was a shocker, a long hop, down legside, it was on it's way down when it got to the batsman, hardly what you'd call a lifter. It was supposed to be fast medium, but I choked, it was crap. Then I got one in almost the right spot with my 4th ball, short of a length on off stump, a bit quicker, it got big on the batsman and he tried a pull shot but was only halfway through his shot, and he skied it to square leg. A wicket in my first over for a new club, it made my day.

Next week they chased down our score for the loss of 4 wickets, I bowled like crap, and dropped a catch and the guy made a hundred. The less said about that the better. 1 for 36 off 9 overs I think, including two overs of legspin that went for 16. Thus ends my career as a legspinner, for the forseeable future anyway.

Today we played a 45 over game, on turf. We bowled first, I opened the bowling because one of our new ball bowlers wasn't playing. My first spell was ok, ridiculous amount of seam movement, unplayable at times, but too many bad balls in between for my liking. 5 overs for 13. I came back late in the innings, and got hit for a few sixes, but I got someone bowled off an inside edge after an over of dot balls caused him to slog, then got someone else caught at slip. 2 for 40 off 9 overs, or something like that, my eyes are crap and cricketers have messy handwriting. They made 239 off 45 overs. I dropped two more catches, I can't see straight anymore, medication gives me double vision, it's why I wasn't taking it as prescribed for so long and giving everyone the, umm, annoyances. Might have to skip my pills the morning before a game, could lead to some ridiculous Malcolm Marshall and Abdul Qadir impersonations, and much irritation for team mates and opposition alike, but hey, dropping catches is worse than being crazy and being hated (I think).

We fell in a heap again when we batted, our first 5 batsman out didn't make double figures, including me. I batted at 5 and flicked a nice 4 off my pads, then got bowled by one that swung away then seamed back about a foot. Our captain batted well, and a few of the others batted well too, we ended up being all out for 181 off about 41 overs.

A young guy batted well for us, not sure how old he is, maybe 14, he scored 25 or 30 not out, nice high elbow, and good timing, definately going to be a good batsman one day with a technique and temperament like that at his age.

We also had a girl in our team, I think she was about 14, I think she is in the state team, she bowled spin, they couldn't pick her wrong-un, she did well, got someone out stumped, and I dropped a catch on the boundary off her bowling too. Well, at least I turned a 6 into a single, by managing to get in it's way, though I didn't have to move at all, he hit it straight to me, managing to get out of it's way would have been more impressive.

So we are doing ok, considering how young some of our players are, and how crap some of our fielders are (ok, considering how crap one of our fielders is, not mentioning any names, but I'll give you a clue, me.).

Well, we ended up winning every game after the first two, and flogged last years premiers in the final, ending the game with a Hattrick.

Not a bad season.
