So I'll try this... all comments are welcome, do not expect this to be as great as other stories I've (pratially) read over here but I thought I'd share my choices of signing players and some highs and lows. Don't expect regular updates, I'll post once in a while or every day depending on how busy I am and how the reactions are.

Can Utch get them to the top?

D. Utch from Holland had been assigned to manage Somerset CCC from 2007 on. The board hoped he could get Somerset to win trophies and promoting to the first division of the County Championship and the Pro League within three years.

It's the first of April and we're at the brink of a new season of county cricket.
Somerset are among the favourites for the Challenge Trophy after their win last year. The County Championship was won by Warwickshire last year, newcomers in division one are Essex and Somerset. The 2007 twenty20 season ended in that fantastic final between Kent and Somerset with Kent posting 195-4 and Somerset's John Francis and Matthew Wood chasing and getting ahead of the run rate until the tenth over from where on Kent took the lead and Somerset finished off on 178-8. Pro League winners Lancashire will be looking to retain their title. Somerset, missing promotion because they lost three of their last four Pro League games, are eager to promote this year.

Somerset will be led by Marcus Trescothick, no. 5 World Test Player and Matthew Wood, leading domestic run scorer in the 2007 County Championship. Much is expected from Justin Kemp in his second season at Somerset and from Baragamage Amarasinghe, newly signed Sri Lankan offspinner. Somerset will be hoping Michael Munday improves further to take a lot of first-class wickets this season (after his 66 last year). Other key players will be brutal batsman and off-spinner Wesley Durston and opening bowler Richard Johnson.

Last season's statistics, for you to have a look at.

Last season's first XI: Wood (c) and Francis opening, Kemp at 3, Durston at 4, Hildreth at 5, Trescothick/Gazzard/Spurway (wk) at 6, Laraman (after Moore was dropped) at 7, Louw (after Phillips was dropped from the FC squad) at 8, Munday (FC) or Phillips (OD) at 9, Johnson and Willoughby

Some thoughts by the manager
Matthew Wood managed some great centuries, while Justin Kemp did great as a batting all-rounder, together they managed to break Somerset's record partnership for the second wicket: they put together 292 in the match in which Kemp went on to 222.

Although I had 7 bowlers in my XI, I couldn't take the needed wickets in FC matches, Munday will need to improve, what I expect he will, and Willoughby and Johnson, the opening bowlers, will need to improve as well, I'm in doubt over renewing Willoughby's contract.

Ian Blackwell didn't manage to score runs and with Munday and Durston there was enough spin for me. I guess mr. Blackwell can say his goodbyes. As will Parsons, he couldn't prove his worth and it's to risky for me to keep him along with new youth players. Lett, Moore and Winters (this year's youth players) will be given a chance because they can improve, and because they have contracts running.

Because many players have contracts for next year I will have to cut some. Durston has deserved a new contract, as has Kemp, if he is available.
Louw won't get a new contract, as he was only a final (cheap) addition to the squad. Having a look at all contracts I think Willoughby, who is out of contract, will not get a new one.

The off-season activities:
New signings:
Batsmen: none
Wicketkeeper: R Osborne (youth)
All-rounder: S Jefferson (youth RM)
Bowlers: B Amarasinghe, N Reed (youth RF), I Hunter, S Johnston (youth RM)

Retired: Parsons
Out: Gazzard, Spurway, Trego, Phillips Louw, and Willoughby

Overseas players: J Kemp and H Boteju
Captain: M Wood Vice-Captains: M Trescothick and R Johnson

Good luck with the story Dutch. Squad looks a little thin with those new signings and retiree and players let go.

One keeper for a whole season is a bit of a risk isn't it?

Risks are to be taken... and at physio level 50.000 the risk is arguably smaller
Bad news though... my game crashed so I lost the new signings and stuff... and at second sight I don't think I'm going to do the story with two exam periods coming up and more cricket to be watched during the rest of the day...

Story is looking great , and all the best for ur exams mate :thumbs

thanks for the thumbs up for both the story and the exams lol
I'll start by editing the first post. I have played for some time yesterday without taking screenies though... well I'll post some things, maybe a story which progresses a little faster than one match in 20 posts is fun as well :p

Monthly interview with the manager
Welcome to Somerset CCC news. My name is Billy Beef and today we have our monthly interview with the manager of our county cricket team. I am happy to have the manager, D. Utch, here for the first time this year. We will talk with him about the new ... Oh well you'll hear!

BB: Morning, mr. Utch.
DU: Morning Billy, please call me Dave.
BB: As you wish :). So, tell us about what you've experienced at Somerset over the past year.
DU: I think this is a great team and a great staff to work with. There are some players really eager to do what they can for their team and some senior players who are able to help the youth players. Last year I noticed new players are integrated into the squad very smoothly.

BB: That's nice to hear. You've played an important role in the contracting of players. How about the new signings, and the youth players coming into the team?
DU: I'm very happy to have Justin [Kemp] for another season as he has played a huge role last year. I think Barmy [Baregamage Amarasinghe], as he is already called sarcastically because of his unenglishness, is a great addition to the team and makes us a top spin bowling squad with Mike [Munday] and Wes [Durston]. I hope the youth batsmen we promoted from our academy over the last years can have a great impact on our game. We haven't signed any new blood in the batting department, but if Edwards, Moore, Lett and Winters progress as they are doing our batting will be strong enoug, led by more experienced players like Matthew Wood and Marcus Trescothick.

BB: How about the all-rounder department, Peter Trego and Ian Blackwell lost their contracts, and we have seen last year that you like to play with allrounders to either back up your bowling or your batting, how about replacements if either Kemp or Durston gets injured?
DU: Actually, Justin is still nursing a broken finger, so he won't be able to play the first week of the season. Aaron Laraman will probably be in the OD eleven, and Sam Jefferson will be eager to make his debut on the professional level.

BB: How about the fast bowling department?
DU: There's Richard [Johnson] to open the bowling. Gareth Andrew and Mark Turner are two developing players. I think we have a gem in Nick Reed, an academy right-arm fast bowler who has really impressed me. Other options might be Simon Francis, Ian Hunter and youth player Stu Johnston.

BB: You were clear you weren't happy about Gazzard and Spurway's performances last year, hoe about wicketkeepers?
DU: That's true, I found they were way below par in the batting department. We have given Richard Osborne a contract in the hope he will develop into a valuable finisher.
BB: I'm afraid our time's up now Dave, thanks for the interview and please join me next month!
DU: My pleasure, see ya!

Youth player in the spotlight
This is Trevor Riddly with the 'youth player in the spotlight' It's april 30th and today I'll tell you more about... Nick Reed.
Nick Reed is 22 years old, born on the ninth of June 1985. He is a right arm fast bowler and, to use a clich?, he fancies himself with the bat, which he uses right-handed. He is already a bit of a scare for some who find the ball already in the wicket-keeper's gloves before they've thought of playing a shot. Nick has received the nickname Fourfour from his teammates. They say it's something to do with the number of characters in his name.

Nick made his first class debut on the 19th of April 2008 for Somerset against Warwickshire, last year's County Champs. Altough he didn't manage to take wickets with the new ball he took 5 wickets in the match. In his 3 for 36 in the first innings he got Troughton and Ambrose lbw and Loudon bowled. In the second innings, in which Latouf's 112 got the Bears to a defendable total, Fourfour took the wickets of Ian Bell and, again, Alec Loudon to end with 2 for 82. He came in at 7 in the first innings scoring 23 becoming Loudon's victim. Let's see if the battle between the two of them continues!

Nick took another three wickets in his second match to get him to an average of 29.62. In his only OD appearance he took 3 wickets at 19.33.

Trivia:
- Nick Reed is known by his teammates by the nickname of Fourfour.
- He prefers playing pool to playing darts.
- He told his mate Stu Johnston his wish is to climb to the top of a stand to fetch a cricket ball he should have hit for six.

I'm sure we will hear a lot more from this lad!

I dont usually follow ICC stories but I like the effort you have put in so far, good job mate!
