South Africa in Australia Nov-Dec 2012/13

Damn well i guess Quiney deserves based on the same reasons Cowan earlier this year. But it does show how limited confidence the selectors have in young stars in Khawaja & Hughes.

Plus i'd say Bailey deserves a test chance before Quiney, even if it meant reshuffling the batting line-up to accommodate him.

If Watson isn't 100% fit then he shouldn't play, even as a specialist batsmen. He's had far too many injuries over the years to risk them. It's better for him to be right for the next test.

McDonald would be a good choice. I believe he has scored runs over the last few Shield seasons and his few tests were against South Africa.

Watson has been ruled out so Quiney in. He could do a Marsh and steal Cowan's spot if he makes runs and Cowan doesn't.

Ugh. So long as we're only keeping the one spot for 30-year-olds who average less than 40 in first class cricket.

Don't get me wrong, I think Quiney (or similar) is the right decision in this instance. But I only really think that because we need a stop-gap for ~12 months while Hughes and Khawaja properly sort themselves out.

Quiney seems like a level headed guy. He'll go about his business quietly. I think he can perform well in this test and beyond if given the chance. Heard that he was the player of the year in Shield last season and second highest run scorer the year before, so his selection does have merit to it. I hope he goes well. The fact that he has been called up at the age of 30, reminds me of Hussey in a way. Both of them made their debuts at the Gabba as well.

Haze in the squad, would be training as he is no chance given we are already struggling trying to get Starc into the side.

I like this. Pattinson and Starc seem to have benefited hugely from spending ~6mths in the squad before making their debut, and if Hazlewood can do similar then we might end up asking some serious questions about whether to include spin specialists in the XI at all over the next 10-12 years.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves, etc, etc - but if I was a young Test batting prospect I'd be working on my part-time spin.

If only David Hussey was about 10 years younger!

Quiney called up, good luck to him but really feels like a stop gap measure with no real future.

It's an interesting one. One part of me thinks it good, rewarding guys like Cowan and Quiney who have been the best run accumulators in the past 2 seasons. But the other part of me is crying inside because it shows the contempt the selectors have for the younger batsmen when guys with average talent and pedestrian overall records (bar the last 2 seasons) are getting picked. You can usually tell 'talent' by how often a guy has played junior cricket for Aus or got on Aus A tours. Cowan and Quiney have a distinct lack of that in their records (until very recently). I get the feeling that if they lose any of that confidence they've built up by scoring Shield runs that they'll soon sink like a stone on the international scene eg. Peter Forrest last year. I guess use them while that confidence lasts and hope the younger, more 'talented' fellas get it together soon.

YES! It's a noticeable absence in skills, think of Hughes, Khawaja, S.Marsh, Ferguson - the 'chosen' ones...none are bowlers of note.

Is he a good choice? I know he wasn't a great player...

He got picked ahead of Waqar Younis, so on paper it sounds like he passes the sniff test. De Winter's been coaching in Tasmania, mainly as an assistant coach in the last few years, and that's coincided with an improvement in their play. What is coach and what is player though is always hard to tell. I guess we'll see. I thought Cooley was crap, McDermott good, but most of that judgement was on results.

One of those Tassie guys, Ben Hilfenhaus, talks him up here:

Full advantage South Africa here. I just don't have any confidence in Quniney. He just has to prove me wrong. Steyn & co certainly licking their lips here now.

But as aforementioned, i dont know how Quiney has leapfrogged Bailey for a test spot here. As Ian Chappell mentioned, maybe Clarke could move up to # 3 & let Bailey bat @ # 5.

I'm sorry but tactically i don't agree with this. Surely with Watson out and unable to bowl, AUS best bet to curtail S Africa's batting lineup is throw 4 quicks @ them - which is AUS bowling strength.

This is not due to a lack of confidence in Lyon. But i would think in this series (presuming Watson can't bowl), he should really only play in Adelaide. Brisbane & Perth 4-quicks really have to play man.

"Hopefully I've done the country a favour and bowled Punter into a bit of form. I was thinking about that when I was getting driven for four."

James Pattinson after Ricky Ponting made 162 not out and 60 not out against Victoria in the Sheffield Shield.

Good on him for giving Ponting some confidence

Looking forward to see Robert Quiney don the baggy green cap. He is probably the most exciting batsman to watch in Australian domestic cricket.

Khawaja shouldn't be anywhere near the Aussie team. It's been pointed out a few times in the media that he provides very little off the field and doesn't quite have the energy and professionalism required for international cricket yet. Combined with that the fact that he has been VERY poor in the last 1.5 years. He needs to go back and score some serious runs if he wants to be considered for selection. Anybody who says he should be in the team is saying that based on reputation and clearly hasn't been following his progress over the last 15 months.

Hughes isn't ready to go back to international cricket yet. Throwing him back in the spotlight will do him more harm than good.

Realistically we have very very few young talented batsmen coming through. The only bloke who's actually young and performing is Joe Burns. Can't think of anyone else. As much as you want to develop younger talent, there's nothing wrong with actually playing the best XI blokes in the country from time to time.

Its the state of our batting atm sadly. The young batsmen who were tuning out the numbers have been tried and haven't quite stepped up atm. Joe Burns is the best of the youngsters now and Doolan is next. So really comes down to the failed guys like Smith, Khawaja and Hughes to start making the big runs as they are the young guns with an average over 40.
