South Africa's tour of India - October/December 2015

No one ever said South Africa lost because of the pitch, it was as clear as daylight that the batsmen were out of their depth but we were within our rights to complain about the pitches, the Nagpur pitch was classified as bad so we were actually right believe it or not. That being said it isnt taking anything away from our performances, which looked like we could be bowled out by Prosper Utseya. I love how ever Indian supporter has taken this way out of proportion. Like Rudolph said I would expect more maturity and I started in the co7 forums...

What's stopping India from touring SA? Why would there be problems with India SA games. I don'tknow what you are alluding to there.

I presume he is referring to how your board sabotaged our traditional new years newlands test last time because of their issues with haroon lorgat...

No the BCCI dont control the ICC Stefan so that didnt happen.*

*obvious sarcasm is obvious

And that's a load of rubbish. Haroon Lorgat went ahead and published the itinerary for India's tour without the approval of the BCCI so that they couldn't back out. Sorry, but if you're willing to play the power game with 'the powerhouse' in cricketing circles, you're going to get shot. India and South Africa have had excellent relations in the cricketing fraternity. Hell, I'm half South African at heart because of AB, so much so that their exit in the world cup had me in tears while the India loss didn't hurt me as much. But, that particular episode was a mistake from CSA and while the BCCI was run by a bunch of goons back then, they weren't at fault in this episode.

As for the challenge to tour SA? I would have been horrified had it been an Indian team of the 90's. Now? I think, in fact I'm sure the Indians will bat better in SA than SA batsmen have in India. Our problem is fast bowling.

The pitches? If SA make green tops, I see it as the only chance of India winning actually. My only beef is that I don't get to see 5 days of good cricket. It's ball dominating bat.

Lastly, this whole episode of India winning tests is a smokescreen. Test cricket is in an atrocious place at the moment. Home sides have way too much power in controlling the pitches. This applies to all countries and England takes the cake with the cherry in this department.

Why don't India try R Vinay Kumar as Ishant's partner in test matches? His domestic stats are quite impressive.

Disappointed with South Africa's batting :( Looks like they've given up already...

They already gave up after Mohali. This batting performance shows that their batting is just bad apart from Amla and De Villiers. The pitch was good for batting and they still blew their chance. They scored more runs in an innings in Mohali and Nagpur compared to this first innings performance!

Ya there is no doubt that Indian batsman perform better in SA than SA batsman performing on Indian pitches. India has always had a solid batting lineup. This series has been a little boring, I expected SA to at least put up a fight and they haven't even done so in this series.

Just for the record. No one here is actually having a go at the South African team or players. They have actually been very mature regarding their comments on the series in general. Plus Indian cricket fans have almost always adored SAF players (since the 90s - mainly because SAF has always produced top class players without the "jerkiness" of their Aussie counterparts)

Its just that the situation in this game presented the perfect platform for sarcasm to thrive. It would be criminal to let go of this chance in all fairness !

The best part is, none of the South Africans have complained about the pitch. Neither their ex players, not their current team. It's some of the Australian assholes and of course how can I forget Michael Vaughn, the biggest twat of all of them who have came out of nowhere to criticize the pitches. Here is an example and how Ashwin responded to one of the trolls.

Seriously? For once, we have 4 bowlers who actually have some pace. Two of them (Yadav and Aaron) can actually hit the 150 k mark when in rhythm. Why would we want to go back to Vinay Kumar! Remember, as far as test cricket goes, Yadav, Aaron and Shami are still pretty new. They have shown ability in patches and we have seen that bowlers take time settling in (read Ishant). I will stick my neck our and say that we have better fast bowling than Pakistan, at the moment (shoot me for that). Ishant, Yadav, Aaron along with Shami could form the core bunch along with Bhuvaneshwar being the 5th seamer who could slot in for tours to NZ/England.

Also, with Kohli`s captaincy, he is going to back these guys to get wickets. I`m actually pretty upbeat about our test side. I keep saying this again and again, will repeat this again. India, since the retirement of Tendulkar had not played a single test till this SA series. That is 2 years without a home test. The bulk of the side that toured SA, NZ, England and Australia were on their first tours. The conditions were alien to these guys as well, as it has been for SA here. For guys on their first tours, let us look at how we fared in those series.

2013 SA tour: We dominated 4/5 days of the Jo`burg test and were in with a shout of winning it. At Durban, we were on top with the bat in the first innings and even with the ball I remember SA being 100-ish for 4 before we let it slip. Should`ve drawn that series at the very least. We gave wickets to Robbie Peterson at Durban!

NZ tour: We did a fine job chasing 400 in the fourth innings at Auckland. Lost by 50 runs and at one stage were sitting pretty during the chase. The game at Wellington, had Jadeja caught McCullum should`ve been an innings win for us. Yet again, a squandered chance.

England: 1st test at Nottingham, we let Anderson put on 200 runs with Root for the last wicket! A possible first innings lead of 200+ turned into an even first innings. Should`ve won that game despite the wicket being a road. Won at Lords and were woeful since. Yet, we managed to stay even for the first three tests. Most teams haven`t managed that overseas.

Australia: Drew two tests and were in with a real good chance of a win going into the final session at Adelaide. We again showed promise with the ball at the GABBA and let Australia go from 240/7 to 500. A story of missed opportunities but not disgraced.

SL: Should`ve won 3-0, to be honest.

So overall, if you stack that up against how teams fare overseas these days, these guys with some luck or some experience of winning should`ve got 5 or so overseas test wins under their belt. Yet we only got that 1 at Lords on what was ironically a garden of a wicket for the first 3 days. The overseas stats (including the SL series) during that period read; P:16, W:3, D:5,L:8. That by modern touring standards is not disgraceful. I believe, this side, on their next set of overseas tours will turn a leaf or two. Ashwin, if he can bowl the way he is right now will do fine overseas. The seamers will do better with a captain who is now willing to back them, unlike Dhoni who was allergic to pace. Its okay for bowlers to be a little erratic in tests, if they have real firepower. These guys will always get you more wickets than a Mohit Sharma, Vinay Kumar or Pankaj Singh.

All the pitch talk and reiterating that Delhi is a good wicket has got a little boring. So though of doing some analysis with this long post.

To be honest, I hold you and your opinions in very high regard. I think there are four five of us here that are active and in general, posts are very enjoyable to read. I am fully aware that some arguments were very lame during the Nagpur test but you answered my question yourself. SA are minus the 'jerkiness' of the Aussie counterparts. I think, as Indians we can be a bit humble and not drive the SA fans into the mud with our sarcasm. It just elevates you, me and the average Indian fan in general even if this is only a discussion forum.

Lastly, let's not forget this is sport. Someone has to win and someone has to lose and every country goes through such terrible tours. At such a time humility is easily forgotten. I say this because I know how it felt in the 90's to go abroad on vacation and have people laugh at our cricket team. I just feel I'd rather be an irrational passionate fan with humility than a knowledgeable jerk.

@aditya123 I wish I shared your optimism about our pace attack. I have no doubt they have speed and can bowl an impressive spell but I'm yet to see the consistency abroad. Umesh Yadav and Varun Aaron in particular make me feel like tearing my hair out.

The best moment of this game for me has to be Umesh Yadav's spell. And as adi said, India for once have a very promising pace attack of Ishant, Yadav, Aaron and Shami. If they get the pitches, they will perform. And I am happy that Kohli seems a guy who gives preference to raw pace over line and length. Results should slowly start to follow. You might initially see a period of waywardness, but I believe the results should come.

Great knock from Rahane and Ashwin. And SAF have themselves completely tied up in a mental knot. That's what explains their performance in this series.
