Legal, no question, the rules had been changed prior.
It goes a small way to evening things out for the fielding team considering the power play and field restriction limits that make it easier for the batsmen
Bigger and bigger scores are being made (anyone see the 400 v 400 Tasmania v Queensland OD today?) the

The ICC saying that Smith's movement was legal should really be the end of this debate. The law this situation came under is outdated with things like ramps and reverse shots being utilised by batsman these days. The ICC did an excellent job of clarifying how the rule will now be interpreted.

This.

I wouldn't be happy if he was moving before that ball was bowled but seeming as he started moving after the ball was released I don't see what's wrong with it. It still takes skill to anticipate and judge where the ball's going to be hit.

Almost a direct repeat bar first to leg.

You stole my thunder there. When I saw the Steve Smith one I instantly thought of this example. Except this one was a mirror image

Ofcourse it's illegal, what can a batsmen do about that anyways? The irony that umpires can't follow their own rules..

Only it isn't; as the playing conditions clearly allowed that sort of preemptive movement by fielders. You may not like it or want it to be illegal; but that doesn't stop it from being legal in that game.

Law 41 (7) - Movement by fielders

Any significant movement by any fielder after the ball comes into play, and before the ball reaches the striker, is unfair. In the event of such unfair movement, either umpire shall call and signal Dead ball. Note also the provisions of Law 42.4 (Deliberate attempt to distract striker).

Umpires not following their own rules, cricket level today..

And the playing conditions overrule the laws. Therefore they are and it's legal.

I have read a lot about "playing conditions" over-ruling rule 41(7). Just what are these playing conditions. Could someone explain pls. Thx.

They're what the ICC put in place to override the laws basically.

Anywhere I can read up on these rules.

Edit - Found it and read it. Cricket Rules - ICC Rules and Regulations

I am sorry but there is nothing contained in the playing conditions for tests, that actually over-rules Law 41(7).

There is nothing in it to say that the fielder can move before the ball has reached the batsman, in anticipation of the shot.

The playing conditions, in so far as fielders go, for the most part deals with substitute fielders, and exchanging of protective equipment between the players.

To say that the playing conditions would actually over-rule law 41(7) is utterly incorrect. They contain nothing, which affects Law 41(7) even remotely.

Hence the catch is still illegal.

If there is something I have missed, I would appreciate it if someone could copy paste the exact rule of "playing conditions" here that makes the catch legal.

Apparently from what I've seen looking around the playing conditions were revised on the 1st October allowing fielders to move if there is a clear change in stance.

Yep. ICC had a workshop for umpires where they were explained the revised playing conditions. A bit silly on part of the ICC or whoever to not put it in writing as well
